Volkswagen. The peoples car. In recent years, I feel like VW has lost touch with that market of people who needed affordable and reliable transport.
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much it would cost to manufacture from top to bottom a bug in today's money? and how much would I be buying one for if they were still sold today?
what would it cost to build a VW today?

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

the first one will probably cost you around 300 million dollars
they'll get cheaper after that.
If you want to take an existing bug and rebuild it to new standards but old technology, I wouldnt start without R100k spare

Re: what would it cost to build a VW today?
I've no idea how one would work out the cost of building a classic Beetle today. But consider this: a Beetle bodyshell had more than 6,000 welds, whereas modern cars have fewer than 2,000 welds, with many panels now being glued together.
The time and labour involved in building a classic Beetle would make it even more expensive than a modern car with all the tech. A big part of modern car design is about making the cars quick and easy to build.
