1968 Baywindow Kombi
I recently bought a restored 1968 baywindow. I am not sure what decals/emblems should be on the Kombi, and where. Also, whether it should be painted, or chromed. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: 1968 Baywindow Kombi
Welcome to ACVWSA 68Bay.
I'm not sure if you posted pics of your bus as my work blocks most pics hosting sites, but we love to see pics.
Firstly, how certain are you that your bus is a 1968? A 68 VIN should read 2x8 xxx xxx, with the 3rd digit signifying year. The second digit specifies model (1 = panelvan, 2 = microbus, 3 = kombi, 4 = deluxe microbus, 6 = pick-up, 7 = ambulance).
Your bus should have a VW mblem on the nose panel and an aluminium VOLKSWAGEN script on the lower rhs of the rear hatch. Only deluxes had a chromed front emblem; other models had the nose emblem painted white. Deluxes also had aluminium trim on the beltline and bumpers. There were no decals on 1968 buses, only the emblems noted above.

Thank you for the info, Fig. The VIN starts with 228....I am satisfied that it has the VW-emblem, in white ,on the nose ,and the VOLKSWAGEN-badge on the back. I will post photos of the Kombi as soon as I have it in my possession. It is still with a family-member, that picked it up for me.

So you have a 1968 microbus. Good find. Microbuses had slightly fancier interiors than kombis, including upholstered side panels and ventilation for the rear passenger area. Does your bus have original basketweave upholstery?

Re: 1968 Baywindow Kombi
It does have the original basketweave upholstery. The back-bench have a tear or two in it, though. The rest is quite good.
I will post pictures the week after next. I will need more advice, as this is my first Kombi.

Assuming it's a SA-assembled bus, you will find the VIN plate on the bulkhead behind the driver's seat, and the VIN will be stamped to the right (FIF) of the engine, on the horizontal surface near the battery.
The engine number is stamped on the RHS engine case half, directly below the generator/alternator pedestal.

Beautiful
but if you want to keep it that way, you had better move that fuel filter out of the engine bay before you next drive it. Any leaks and it'll catch alight - remember its plastic and right above a hot exhaust and next to a distributor full of high voltage sparks...
