Greetings Chaps,
I purchased a beach buggy recently it is licensed and has papers but when I wanted to take it for roadworthy we couldn't find the chassis plate anywhere. Don't know if it was stolen(maybe silicone) as I couldn't find pop riveting holes anywhere. Question could I have a plate custom made as I believe it's a Gobex Buggy and from what I heard they no longer in operation.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
the chassis number is usually punched into the chassis between the frame horns under where the beetle's back seat would have been, just behind the hole through which you access the gear linkage coupling.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
If the vin number starts with AAP or something like that, look at the driver side rear wheel chassis parts as thats normally where they stamped them.

Tony I have marked what I think you referring to with the red circle.
One of the mechanics even scratched to see if its not under the paint. Nada
We had the buggy on a lift.
Herman checked everywhere there.
If anyone has a Steve's Buggy "Jasper" Model to be more specific please assist.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
The number should be stamped on the tunnel near the gear linkage hole as Tony says but they are very faint and you need to look hard.If you get some white chalk and rub it where the number should be it will come up after a gentle wipe using your hand or as Herman says on the back.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
Late Beetle pans did not have a number anywhere. Late Beetles had the VIN number stamped into the body, to the right of the bonnet catch.
Your buggy was possibly built on one of these pans, without a number. The builder probably riveted a VIN plate somewhere to the body, which disappeared at some point.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
Have a look at your papers, If its a normal vw vin number it would be on a riveted plate some where, but I think you have a MIB vin number that Gobex was issued by the Dept. of Transport, so this would have been stamped on the metal part of the chassis, on a hard part.
This would have been covered by all kind of things by now.
If it is a Police number, the Police clearance will be able to tell you where to look as its location will be on their computer, in fact, the location of the in-house number would probably be registered with the police clearance guys anyway.

Re: Chassis Plate Missing
I love it when you got a nice car and it needs a new number they come out with a big box of stamps and a big hammer and find a place and pound the numbers in destroying your cars beauty. You use to be able to buy a new blank vin plate at a caravan shop in my area not legal but they sold them.
