Barrel honing

I have a set of barrels with no real damage on but do show their age/ mileage and would like to have them
cleaned up (honed out) and get new matching rings for the pistons
Can anyone recommend a good Engineering workshop that does this in JHB ?

Just make sure you clean them properly,clean it with petrol then when you think they are clean get some Clean Green then see how much dirt comes out using a clean rag then coat the barrel with clean oil straight away.Bedding in the rings in must be done under load do not run idle to long otherwise the bores will glaze and it will use oil.Run in with a straight SAE 40 or what they recommend you use .My 2c worth.

Thank you very much for that solid advise and so true ... if you think its clean ...clean it again for good measure !
The barrels I have need to be machined/ honed out and I really need to find a reliable decent machine shop
that can sort these out

Clean Green is magic clean the bores with what ever you want petrol or paraffin then use a clean green with a clean rag and you will be amazed how much grime is still left behind then oil the bores straight away as clean green is water based and will cause surface rust.

my"Old Toppy" mechanic always said, that a barrel or engine block must be placed outside in the rain for two to four weeks after honing and before assembly so that the surface rust can pit the barrel to form oil pockets.

This will give 100 000 plus miles of service everytime.

2-4 weeks in the rain? In CPT, thats about 7 years the way things are going...

honing it properly gives the correct cross hatch which holds the oil properly
