Front wheel bearings on Beetle

Post by Rusty »

I have removed the front wheel bearings on my Beetle and there is something strange about the inner bearings. Although the inner bearing fits perfectly into the sphere (drum), the ID of the bearing is much larger than the stub axle diameter - the thing does not even touch the stub axle - so in my opinion it serves no purpose!! Is this German engineering I don't understand or is there something (Shim/spacer) missing ?

Hopefully Rusty was talking about a new set of bearings - if he's talking about ones that he just pulled off the car ...

The car has been going on those bearings (well just one bearing on each wheel) for more than 3 yrs. Any idea what the correct part number is? - I have the thinner stub-axles for sure & the inner bearing for this must be a strange looking thing!!

I've replaced the bearings on my 58 KG 3 weeks ago and had the same problem. My local parts shop exchanged and found a set of the older type inner bearings for me. Unfortunately I dont have the old bearings close by to give you the numbers but will check back later.

The wheel inner wheel bearing nr that fitted on my 58 KG is 30305. If I remember correctely, the newer ones are 30306 but check with your spares shop.

The inner bearings I have are 30206 - they are the ones that don't fit. The outers are 30304 and they fit.

I have variable camber - depending on which way I turn !!
