I have removed the front wheel bearings on my Beetle and there is something strange about the inner bearings. Although the inner bearing fits perfectly into the sphere (drum), the ID of the bearing is much larger than the stub axle diameter - the thing does not even touch the stub axle - so in my opinion it serves no purpose!! Is this German engineering I don't understand or is there something (Shim/spacer) missing ?
There are two different types of bearings used in sa production.
late stubaxles were thicker on the inside and it is probably those bearings yuove got

Who cares how it's done in California?

The car has been going on those bearings (well just one bearing on each wheel) for more than 3 yrs. Any idea what the correct part number is? - I have the thinner stub-axles for sure & the inner bearing for this must be a strange looking thing!!
I've replaced the bearings on my 58 KG 3 weeks ago and had the same problem. My local parts shop exchanged and found a set of the older type inner bearings for me. Unfortunately I dont have the old bearings close by to give you the numbers but will check back later.
