Re: Engine number what year sfdr124216
SF = built in SA
D = 1200
R = replacement case
It could be anything now. You'll have to remove a head and measure bore and stroke to know what's inside. 1200 cases can be built to 1600 spec.
1200 engines weren't originally built in SA (they were built in Germany for SA-assembled cars), so the SF and the R tell you the engine was rebuilt with a new case by VWSA, who would only have built it to stock 1200 spec. It's anyone's guess when it was rebuilt and what's been done to the engine since.
Does the engine have 1200 inlet manifold, carb, distributor, etc?

does a B (instead of D) mean 1500?
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

B is 1600 single port. H is 1500.

Re: Engine number what year sfdr124216
Been on the forum in 2015 and at the time I could not get info on my Beetle engine number. Starting SFBR
At the time closest I could get was that it could be a rebuild/sub-assembly locally made. Contacted VWSA but they could not or didn't want to help.
From above posts and other threads I can assume
SF - SA build
B - 1600 single port
R - Rebuild
VIN number starts 1102
1 - Beetle
1 - Type 1
0 - 1970
2 - second decade
intake manifold code is 113.129.701 K – not sure if it is the right one for 1600cc?
Carb is bit of a curve-ball, it is the SOLEX 30 PICT 1. I believe this is not the right one for single port 1600? Current main jet is 120 and idle jet is 55 not sure of the rest.
On the DATA plate just before the serial/VIN number is a 3 digit Model number, 114 , Any idea what that is?
With the info above what will the timing be, TDC, 7.5 BTDC or 10 BTDC?
Should I go for 125 or 127.5 Main jet?
What replacement Carb Should I look at if I want to go that route?
Will really appreciate all help. Try to get the Bug going again for my son.
Thx in advance
Vick
