Sean here. Been working on boats and my Defender for a bit (hobby not commercial). I am a little handy with the tools I have but have always shied away from anything mechanical. I bought my son a buggy (1400 Ford motor in it) but was worried about the safety/reliability (floor pans are terribly rotten). Ended up getting him a different car that is a bit more reliable etc...
So, long story short the buggy has been standing in the garden for about 4 years. Call it a midlife crisis if you will, but I have started getting interested in rebuilding this little thing. What I do know at this point is that I want to replace the 1400 Ford with a VW air-cooled engine (I am thinking the 1600 Dual Port ... but that may change as I learn more).
What I am finding is that there is a massive amount of information, but that a lot of this information includes details that are taken for granted ... E.g. some of the part include numbers/measurements that may mean something to you gurus but mean nothing to someone like me with no experience in motors etc.
So ... truckloads of reading and studying ... next ... standby for the questions to start...
Welcome here, nice to see interest in going back to Aircooled, as I always think its the sound and personality of the aircooled that makes it so desirable.
@Pine is our buggy expert, sure he will be more then willing to give info needed.
Start a project thread, and lets have some photo's to get use in the mood.

I just bought my first bus, a 1970 Lowlight (I think it's a Microbus Deluxe, but unsure). Due to arrive this weekend.
I am a total newbie when it comes to anything mechanical (or anything at all for that matter), but I will attempt to service the engine myself and make sure it is fit for installation.
I look forward to soaking in the knowledge of this forum (it's also the first forum I aim to be actively a part of).
Finally my Autovilla has arrived and I can call myself an aircooled owner and can properly introduce myself.
My name is Graham, living on the KZN South Coast. I have gotten stuck in, where I can, on renovation of a 1981 Autovilla with 2L aircooled engine. I'm going to be needing lots of advice and feedback, so I am grateful for this forum and any who are able to give advice or any old comment. After this post, I will be posting on projects any issues as they arise. My first will be my fuel tank woes. Would appreciate any advice there as well.

Im Graham from a small town called Kuruman in the northern cape, i love vw's and even doing some work on them even though im not a qualified mechanic but my passion has always been cars and sound. i dont own a kombi but was born into the vdub family and own 2 vw's , a 1995 jetta vr6 and 2008 citi r-line 1.8i limited edition and currently have a engine project which will include modification with kombi pistons and this is my reason for joining the group to get advice from the guys/girls with more experience then me and im always eager to learn especially when it comes to vw. Hi there everyone, my name is Jack I recently re-joined the acvw club.. I remember my dad bought a brand new Beetle way back…mmm.. must have been 72 or 73 for R550 and he had it for about 17 years. It was the car I learned to drive with and it sure gave me lots and lots of joys…well and some heartaches.
My daughter .. 17 and a real flower child, made me crazy for a little bug .. after lots of scouting and web surfing I found a 1971 Beetle for a good price and I was able to start her up and took her home.
At first we decided to do some minor touches and just spur her up a bit…BUT when we started stripping and cleaning … ooohh boy.. now we sit with a complete body-off restoration project all ready waaayyy over budget … but we Love it..!! right?
Welcome, and yes we call it an addiction, for want of an other word.
As these cars have a soul of their own, you get to love it with all its quirks.
Enjoy and I am sure your family will get lots of joy out of her.
