Re: Pan Bent?
Looks good ... but how are you going to attach the pans to the frame ??
Or are you just going to clamp the pan between the body and the Frame ?

Re: Pan Bent?
So the seats and peddle assembly bolt through the floor pan into the pieces I wielded in. And then my plan is that there will be a few small nuts and bolts to hold the middle areas and sides.
I am going to be putting the bed liner on the top of the frame now as well, excluding the tunnel as a type of cushion for the aluminum pans...
I hope that will work...

Re: Pan Bent?
Guys I need help with the paint please.... Was using red oxide and then an industrial black over the top of it... Looks like that was a mistake as it scratches super easy and in places the paint has come off showing bare metal again...I can use the spray gun no issues but I don't know anything about paint..
May need to go back a step... What is the correct primer and paint to use on the frame?
Its a real pity because on the whole bottom and most of the top I have already put the RB10 liner down and it's looks amazing..

Re: Pan Bent?
The problem starts at the raw metal.
As most steel and sheets now come from Chine, where they treat the shipment with an mixture of all kinds of 2nd hand oils,
this is done for the long sea trip so it will not rust by the time you buy it.
Now to paint any of this stuff, you need to get rid of this goo before you paint.
That is why most metal workers grid blast everything before painting, or you need to have a excellent de-greaser.
Next you need some kind of paint that will bite into the metal, so we use a 2K etch primer, this will give you the firm base to work from.
As this primer is so good you can have it un-painted for approx. 6 months before you have an issue with rust forming under it.
Now after that you can give it a top coat or you need only put a clear coat on to form a air thighs coating to stop rust forming.
Then you apply your stone chip.
Hope this helps

Re: Pan Bent?
Thanks Herman that helps a lot
The bare metal was a mix of the new steel, but where it's chipping off is on the old frame horns where it went to bare metal during the cleaning process.
Will get my hands on some etch primer and go from there.
Looks like it's time to strip it down again..
Need to make myself a proper frame stand too...
What type of paint should is be using on the gear box?
Thanks again.

Re: Pan Bent?
Thats the same thing ,
the old parts are full of old grease, and sand paper will clean the metal but rub the grease into the steel.
These steels parts need to be de-greased very well to make paint stick.
If you have used a paint stripper, you need to neutralise the stripper 1st before de-greasing, and painting
Something like an ind. alcohol or strong de-greaser soap and then wiped with meth's. before painting.
I would just clean the gearbox and not paint it as it can release heat better if not painted.
If you still want to paint it, use an 2K as well.

Re: Pan Bent?
I cant comment about the painting, but I agree with the gearbox - dont paint it as you are adding an insulation layer and keeping the heat in.

Re: Pan Bent?
So I haven't given up yet..having failed at the first paint job, I have decided to do what I should have done in the first place... To sand blast and then paint with 2K....
The frame I am dropping off with a company in Benoni to do, but the smaller parts I want to do and....
To that end I bought a small hand held sand blaster and made a hell of a mess on one small part... So out came the creativity and I now I am building a sand blasting cabinet almost entirely from stuff I have lying around the house, including an old heating oil tank....
Only thing I bought is the glass and the gloves... The rest is being recycled.
I hope to finish it in the next week or so.
What do you guys think?

Re: Pan Bent?
Looks great, Keith!! Having your own sand blasting setup at home will make parts restoration so much easier. That's another dream of mine, having a BIG compressor and sand blasting cabinet.

Re: Pan Bent?
My compressor is a direct drive 100 litre so I have to be patient... Will be looking for a 200 litre or larger, belt drive to restore in the coming months.

Now you have it forever.

Just need to get myself a hood because that particulate goes everywhere....

Re: Pan Bent?
Cabinet is almost done.
Have to finish the door and seal the glass and attach vacuum and filter and I am good to go. Will make it pretty in the future...
