Novice needs help please, I have a 1973 1600 twin port with a solex h30/31pict carb.
Had idling trouble and found fuel in the oil. Drained and replaced oil, got a carb kit, cleaned and replaced the carb gaskets and replaced the carb. Now the engine idles rough and when the accelerator is pressed the engine does not pick up revs. Adjusting the screws on the carb seems to have no effect. What could be wrong?

You need to do a full service and make sure the valve gaps and timing is correct.
Then work through the carb settings. I suspect your pump jet isnt working correctly - this is the one that sprays in fuel when you move the throttle from idle position to full position

Fuel in the oil could mean a bad fuel pump diaphragm, which is letting fuel leak into the crankcase. Another option is a fuel pump with too high fuel pressure, which pushes fuel past the needle valve in the carb. This excess fuel eventually finds its way into the crankcase.

Accelerator pump check valve could be blocked or is not shutting off, remove very carefully and don't loose little ball bearing or return spring. Blow some carb clean through passage
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

Is that the little ball bearing that sits inside the carb?John Alves wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 2:01 pm Accelerator pump check valve could be blocked or is not shutting off, remove very carefully and don't loose little ball bearing or return spring. Blow some carb clean through passage

Yes, that one does not have a spring, only a ball bearing, you can remove that one using the rear light lens retaining screw/bolt,(beetle) just screw it in and use it as a tool to pull out the press fitted brass plug and the ball bearing should fall out.
There is another one on the side of the carb, it's behind a press fitted pin, this one does have a spring, be careful or it will jump into the void of your workshop, never to be found, ask me how I know.
Clean both passages. YouTube has a few clips on all of this.
