Front disk brakes on 1303

Hey fellas,

Well, I finally had it with these brakes of mine.... SO I am going disks. However, I need some concrete info/help from you guys (Calooker comes to mind 8) ). So far I know that I need Golf 1/2 disks, that I can use Golf 1/2 calipers too. But on my 1303(McPhereson struts), can I use the same spindle?

I need some detailed dimensions of the bearings that I need, so that I can go to this guy I know to see if he can find me some. I understand that the inner bearings are stock Bug ones, but that a custom bearing is needed for the outsides Golf disk => Beetle spindle

I also then am going to need some detailed dimensions for the caliper brackets, so I can fab them up at work.

I appreciate all the help that I can get!


PS. I dont want to go for available kits, because the mark-up price on widely available parts is just ridiculous. Plus, I prefer doing it myself and be proud of it! 8)

I thought a 1303 comes standard with disk brakes?

I know you dont want to go for widely available parts... but correct me if I am wrong, your car will not pass a roadworthy in France unles the parts installed are TUV approved..... You better check that out... CSP parts are TUV approved

is there such kits availebel in SA? and what do they price? I think I recall that Rui makes them or sells them
have nothing on the cards now, but have a red beach buggy in sight that I want

no, we dont need TUV approved parts.

Rui can supply the kits using golf rotors and calipers

I saw a '67 yesterday that has factory fitted disc brakes and those 4 stud wheels.

RUI RUI Rui!!! where are you RUI? what does your kits consist out of and what is the price on a kit for the front Rui?

I was also under the impression that 1303s were all discs.

1500 '67s were stock with discs, and 4-studs. See mine. :)

ZA went back to drums from '68, while the rest of the world carried on with discs. Why? Why? Why?

because drums were made locally, discs were imported

411 disc will fit straight onto 1303 spindles as would golf and opel rear discs so the linkpin type kit available in SA is not needed. I would go for the 411 stuff as the disc is much bigger.Use Golf calipers with a custom made mount

...and what a beaut it is!

My bug's underneath will be complete by year-end, and the brakes are having new mounts made up, and braided hose fitted, but ventilated discs have to wait.

1302 and 1303's were the only german made bugs after 72? and were even available as 1200cc cars so not all came with discs
