Post by candyzzz »

PLEEEAAAAASSSSSE HELP,

I have a BUG, got her for my 18th, her name is Ladybug (she is red with black spots), but she always smells like petrol, its soo strong you can hardly drive her.

I am in JHB and need a decent workshop, need someone who will not try and take advantage of me, (also a student)

Thanks ;)

Where are the smells coming from, the back, middle front, inside?

Before taking ti to somoene, I'd consider trying a few things by yourself if you are a bit handy with a screwdriver.

Also get a manual so you don't get ripped off.

There are a few makkies in jhb and I'm sure that this lot will chirp in when they wake up as to whom you can go to. Where in Jhb are you?

There are few main problem areas you need to look at first, in most cases the seal between the fuel sender unit and the tank perishes and fails, easy to replace, the other place where you get sealing problems is from the filler pipes as the clamps loosen or the pipes start to fail, these will cost a little more to replace but first just get the clamps tightend up a little before replacing any pipes make sure your fuel cap is sealing properly, this is easy, if you have a fuel stain under the flap (later beetles) and above the fender then it needs replacing, there are a few different ones so you need the right cap. Start with replacing the seal at the sender unit first.

Check the stuff calooker mentioned. There's also a breather pipe that comes off the fuel filler pipe which can leak if it's not routed correctly.

It's most likely the sender seal as calooker said. If you look in the boot, on top of the fuel tank there will be a circular thing in the centre. That's the sender. If there are obvious signs of leaking fuel then that's your problem.

If the fuel smell is coming from the engine, DO NOT drive the car until it is identified and repaired. ACVWs catch fire very easily.

You should replace all the rubber fuel lines in and to the engine compartment every year to be safe.

Just remember it is OOM Merlin from now on

A strong smell inside the car usually comes from petrol leaking some where
mostly as callooker said at the cap or tubes to the tank (under the front bonnet.) underneath the tank there is a small rubber pipe 7mm this pipe connects the tank to a metal pipe inside the body this is usually the culprit. this pipe runs inside the floor to the back of the car next to the left rear wheel about 30 cm from the wheel next to the gearbox this pipe comes out and is connected to the engine by another piece of 7mm hose there are two further hoses on the engine also 7mm and they are most likely al worn out.
If you replace these (You will need about 1m of fuel hose and 10 hose clamps to complete this work) you should then be safe from immediate fire the smell might take some time to stop.
