Well it is not a matter of Hi or low tech sometimes... It is a matter of necessity.
It is called a Syn Gas generator. Can be either high or low tech. Carbonizes the carbon in the wood and other trash and converts it to Carbon Monoxide and hydrogen. Burns fine in the motor. But for proformance you still need some gasoline for the accelerator pump.

Basicly it is the same technology that is used today to reform gasoline. It is a tight fit in a beatle but works well on a Beatle truck conversion or a combie.
