In the old days before EFI Alpine Turbo conversions used to turbo just about anything blown through a 36DRLA H Dellorto carb coz the delorto had seals on the Butterfly shafts
Remember there are boost on the shafts now and also fuel and you do not want the fapour to escape and
Poef op in flames
A small suck through system are much cheaper to build with a ESHU carb
I still owe some one else on the forum a basic scetch of a setup like that
after the weekend I will draw something up and post it for you

Dont ask me the fancy names of the seals but yes you are right you actually need the special Sealed turbo as like the blow through carb set up
When Brian used to do the suck through systems he just used to take the compressor housing off and seal it with sealer and fitted a new kit on the Turbo so you dont loose fuel to the Exhaust housing side

A stock beetle ran at Tarlton 20 sec and the turbo stocker ran 17 sec that time superboss territory
And it is better to spesk to some of the turbo builders there are so much that has changed form 1994 to now Turbo wise
When I built my Rx a 60'1 compressor wheel was the biggest before I drove my bug the firs time the Guys were putting T72 Turbos on and that is muther ofa turbos

It is duficould to make a bolt on setup here for there
Basicaly a good exhaust shop can do the bends for you then fit the Hair draaier and carb and get a Tuner to tune the carb on the Dyno
The turbo to use for a stock 1600 is the one from the Uno or the Nissan EXA We did a 1.9 WBX with a EXA turbo before and it was way to small but good for the bug
