Dropped valve seat :(

Post by eben »

Just as i was talking about new heads....
Dropped a valve seat this morning.
Idled roughly and backfired through the one carb... thought it might be valve gap....
took off the one carb, stuck my finger in the inlet port and felt something that shouldn't be there :(
Took a photo cos i couldn't get my head in there...

Dropped valve seat...
Took the head off and was greeted with this...

The other cylinder on the same head had a nasty crack all the way from the exhaust valve to the exhaust port.

Turned the engine over so I could see the top of the piston....

 It looks like I'm going head-hunting this afternoon. :(

Remember std square port heads had the worst life of all as the late bus was the heaviest Check carefully and remember you will also need new heater boxes.

Everyone keeps on telling me that and it makes sense but all the other types of heads that I have seen look far worse for wear and have either dropped seats or have cracks from the ex. valve to the ex port.

There is a post on STF http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=71523 that shows cross-sections of the 1.7 and 2l squareports. The squareport exhaust ports are less restrictive and have more metal in the region where all the others crack.

Funny enough i also saw in a post that if you saw off the ovalport HE flush to the part where the studs go through, you have in essence a squareport manifold. I'll test that statement and see.

Of course I'd like to have all the seats redone plus the guides if needed.

The filters are going to be a little higher and wider than the lid opening.
I already made a linkage and it looks like it'll work fine...
I'll just need to open up the opening a little bit to make way for the filters and then I'll raise the lid above the filters with about 3cm's

Using a different filter won't work because the air correction jets are too tall on their own as well.

I'll post some pictures later.
