What is the worst advice you've ever come across?...

Post by Merlin »

I know of a w/shop which apparently specializes in classic VWs...

I have seen the owners Oval, which he will not sell before you ask.

The Oval is really nice and original, and he has some nice stuff lying around there, but what really got me out of there fast was firstly looking at something he had in his shop, and secondly what he advised my friend to do afterwards...

Firstly, he had this early s/c in his shop.

Apparently he was working on it for some guy up North, ie: outside of ZA.

He had taken a beautifully straight and original with all the factory bits, safaris, etc. s/c, shortened it, hacked the wheel wells, etc. and generally just @#%$ed it up.

...and it looked like a Crayola-special paint-job. :/

...what some people do for money. *sigh*

...but!

My mate, of the blue/white '67 d/c now residing in the UK, had recently bought EMPI 5s and was having difficulty fitting them to the rear of the bus in terms of clearance. Eventually it turned out to be something simple, but never mind that...

This guy, as I stood getting more and more wide-eyed, went on to advise my mate that he should find himself and old Coke (Coca-Cola) bottle - the glass type - and then proceed to place it between the fitted rear wheel and the body...and then to put the bus in neutral and roll it back and forth thereby forcing the bottle to 'flare' the body out in order to accommodate the larger wheels!

We left - fast!

The bottle or pipe thing for rolling the fenders is a hell of a lot cheaper to do than getting a panel shop P/B & respray, I have done it more than once with good results, you could not tell if it had been done, and had no more tyre scraping, I will be doing it again soon on my notch, nothing wrong with that advice if you know what you are doing, better that than a shredded tyre. The idea is not to flare the fenders out but rather roll the inner lip of the fender in.

Rui just remember to close the hole between the fender and wheel cowling up again... the cooling air gets drawn through there & you dont want dust & stones going in there.

Hey Merlin, that reminds me, :D there are other more sinister uses for that steel pipe when it comes to convincing you to sell.

Sell? Me? I've just fired off an email to someone on a similiar note, but that's another story for another time...

My bus will remain mine on my property in my country forever more. :)

I found my Lightsaber works best for that.... :? You must just remember to use the tip as 4' of light tends to cause a bit of extra work in the interior of the car... :? :|
