Yeah discs, I think 67 is the year that they went to discs. They are relatively new, I bought a pair from VW Heritage a couple of years ago and brought them back. She is quite pretty, although the pic is two years old and she has got a bit more rusty on the chrome bits. Also her seats and carpets are due for replacement.

Greetings from a chilly Cape Town.

I have been a car enthusiast for many years - the most recent purchase an Audi A3 1.8T. Back in the early 90's I started a Cal look project which was hugely successful and have decided to start another one in the new year. Quite weird how it all came about. My husband had an accident 2 weeks ago with his Astra - ended up halfway under a truck, according to the insurance company it is a write off, sadly the insurance company repudiated the claim after determining his tyres were under the legal limit. We have since brought the car home and have decided that we can repair it, I have a few contacts in the panelbeating industry and most of the damage requires replacement more than anything else. Anyhow I decided to hunt down a cheap run around on Gumtree for him and started coming across a load of beetles, nostalgia began setting in and when I did a search for beetle parts and came across this site, it all become very clear! Time to get another cal look project underway.
So the idea is to buy a beetle, use it as a daily for the hubby till his car is on the road, then strip down and rebuild the beetle. What amazed me is the amount of things you can get now that were near impossible in the 90's.
Just to give you an idea on our previous project, here is what we did:
I picked her up for R500 (my dad a a workshop and the client had her towed in, suspected engine blown, in fact all that had happened was the breather pipe had come off and blown oil all over the engine... my dad knowing I wanted a car offered the guy R500 for it - which he accepted)
Took the body down to the bare bones, dechromed, derusted and resprayed in metallic wildfire
Colour coded bumpers with indicator lights
Adjustable lowering suspension & mini shocks
14" Rostyle rims and tyres
Sentra GXEi seats
Replaced roof lining, recarpeted in grey, recovered door panels
Electric front windows, one piece window kit
Went through 2 cowley exhausts before I settled on the wildcat
36 IDA weber carb and pancake filter
Short shift kit, small leather steering wheel
Sadly I don't have pics anymore - we will go pretty much the same route on the new project, but will pay much more attention to the engine, gearbox and suspension as I'm currently considering putting her on the track when she is ready

I look forward to getting to know more of you and of course picking your brains shamelessly

Welcome to all you newbie....
Phoenix.... pick away, we have lots to share....

BTW, if you know of a panel beater that can be trusted to do a good rust repair and do exactly as one asks, not what they think is right, please send him my way... I am very keen to get my car redone once I get it going again but this time I dont want the rust popping up again after 2 years

I currently drive an A3 1.8T, my first project beetle (1600TP) was sold in '95. I'm planning a new beetle project for early next year. Apologies if my into wasn't clear.

My Ghia has been off the road for the past 18 months while I was living in the US. I have yet to get it running again and I have this problem with my new wheels that I need to sort out.
