Fabbing cold air intake

Post by eben »

I'm in the process of fabbing(with my limited GRP skills and tools) a cold air intake for my fastback.

It gets really hot underneath the lid and I dont reckon the engine likes breathing there.
I'll be running an opening from both insides of the carb covers and merge them and use one airfilter in a box for both carbs.... then the inlet to the filter would go to the OG air intake on the body....
Anybody know of a filter setup that would work nice? I know you get these enclosed cone filters these days... Any input / suggestions welcome...

if you are linking the two filters into one box, dont forget that you need at leaset one flexible joint, preferrably two, to allow for vibrations and expansion.

I was hoping on using something similar to these for the filter....
I was also planning on flexible hoses to link the two yes....

it's very do-able. just don't buy the autostyle rubbish as it's overpriced and can be easily fabbed by anyone with limited mech knowledge.I'd follow tony's suggestion and have a single airfilter in the middle and run a stock style flat panel filter in there.

hmmmmmmmm, kick ass, I'd be looking at a car with a big airbox, something like a landrover or even a polo. Remember that you have to buy a drop in filter for that box, so that would also be a deciding factor.....I have some pics of a custom one on my pc at work that I'll post next week monday.

Shit, man you are giving yourself so much work, the Alfa 33 air-cleaner box with the carb mountings will work I'm sure, I will look for the filter box, I have one somewhere and it can probably be hooked up to work, I also have the ally carb tops I will take some pics this weekend.

Thanks Rui,
I've never seen one of those so you'll have to measure the height for me :)
With the ones i'm making I'll be able to take the "humps" off my lid that I had to put on for the current filters. Ideally the filterbox should be able to sit where the stock filter sat, in that void on top of the crankcase.

The Alfa carb tops are about 8cm high, a bit too high, but I'm sure you can use the air box, it has two oval outlets similar to the one you have made and the inlet can be hooked up to std position in the body with some flexible piping, the air-box is about 10cm deep and 35x20cm it will work with those carb tops you are making, I'm sure, are they fiber glass?.

Thanks for the compliments..... they are fiberglass yes that has been sprayed with primer.

I'm still getting the hang of the whole fiberglass thing but yeah there is no better way to learn that to do it.

Rui I'd like to see a photo of the airbox if you get the time.

I've also thought about the same thing. My idea is to make a fiberglass housing around the carb that is high enough to fit the large ram tubes with two pipes running into the cabin connected to two cone filters in the rear side windows.

I'm not too keen on the large holes in the fire wall though....

In my case it will make a HUGE difference.... under that lid it gets way too hot.... when i drive for the first 5 mins in the morning , throttle response is beautiful and everything feels nice and strong... as soon as the engine warms up and especially on hot days it seems like the accel pedal looses half of its effect...
