Thundersport is a very well established place here in durbs...my dad always bought his parts for sierra xr8 there...until it met a lamppost...lets just say potent v8+100hp NOS in a corner=bad things...

Your dad had an XR8 :o

Undoubtedly the best car that I have had the honour of driving :twisted:

3000rpm and drop the clutch, turns the weather from sunny to overcast :evil:

It used to spin it's wheels in 5th gear at times, 1 x rear set of tyres every month :finger4u:

Sadly, my mate was forced to sell it after he spent R750-00 in 5 days on the Holy Liquid called Fuel :cry:

RIP BTC 661 GP, one day our paths will cross again :mrgreen:

(Threadjack over, let's talk Type 4s again :D )

Ja ma dads was pushing 308kw on the wheels and ran a best 12.89sec 1/4 mile...they are legend...(ok threadjack is now oficialy over)

Went shopping again.

Got this complete motor---

The plan is to get it running with the solexes, then change to the webers and get them tuned then upgrade to some kind of electronic ignition (any suggestions???) One change at a time so that I can know where to look for problems.It's even got a 210mm flywheel already on it - by the way - does pressure plates still exist for this type of flywheel?

In the end I hope to be able to save this 1800 case and use that with the performance parts.

The only reason for this is because TUNA ("Type 4 secrets revealed") said that it's easier to convert to upright cooling with the open breather. Will have to wait and see if I can manage the conversion :shock:


First problem though ----- can anyone tell me what the h#ll is this for --I know the top one is the fuel cut-off valve, but what is the bottom one for? and it's only on one carb and seems to be connected to the aircleaner.

That is an electric idle cut off solenoid should have them on both carbs. prevents run on if engine is hot.

Before making any hasty decisions, read through this thread on TheSamba. Some are for Type 4s in buggies, but some are against it, with good reason:

Pine, as you know from the beginning I've had some really weird ideas about the cooling "electric fans etc" :oops:
Now I'm convinced it's not going to work, but I'm still going to convert to upright Beetle type cooling (housing and fan).

If I mess that up - I'll be knocking on Armand's door for an IMPI :roll:

Hi people

This is turning out to be almost a forum-built motor, but I would like to hear your opinions on the following:

I've now order SCAT 74mm stroker crank plus 139mm conrods. If YOU had another R30 000.00 to spend where would it go ----

Heads? - heads at aircooled technology goes for about R20 000.00 plus cast iron cylinders and Keith Black pistons about R5000.00 but I would have to shim out to get the deck-height right (about 9 to 10 mm shims)

OR

Nickies ALSO about R 20 000.00 BUT they can be ordered in the correct cylinder length - so no shims BUT then the heads would have to be done at budget which probably means less power. :?

What O WHAT should I do?

Currently I'm leaning towards the getting the heads due to better expected performance.

Anyone know of a better compromise?

I can forward you a lead on two new bare AMC Type 4 cylinder heads for around R5000-00

What is the end cc you are after at the end of the day
101 or 103 Keith black pistons but the sleeves are not as durable as the Mequires local sleeves on turbo aplication
I had them on my buggy and kept cracking till I changed to the local made ones that diesel sleeves can take punishment :D

Thanks Blitzkrieg - I'll keep that in mind, but I do have 2 almost new 1800 heads to start from - I just like those LE 200 heads at aircooled technology site but eish! lots of $$$$

Bugger - Howzit - I'm going with 96mm cylinders for sure - I know many people will object because it's easy to go upto 102/3mm, but I want to stay away from any head sealing problems and many people agree that above 96mm it needs to be Nickies. 96mm will give me 2140cc approx.

I would REALLY like to get Nickies, but buying them would exclude the performance heads and I believe the heads are the MOST important aspect of the whole motor.

I was wondering if there's a way to get cylinders ( cast iron) that can be cut to length so that I can get the LE 200 heads instead.

Or is it possible to get the same flowing heads with bigger stainless valves (like the LE 200) for cheaper here locally so that I can get the Nickies.

My problem then: - Nickies or LE 200 heads --- choose only one. :( :?

Why dont you get the heads ported locally or learn to do it yourself? That way you can save a few grand and maybe not end up with heads that are as perfect as the LE200 but heads that are close. Then go and get yourself a 78mm crank with the money saved. The performance increase from the extra cc/s will offset anything lost by having slightly inferior heads
