Engine Number - what else to check?

Hi,

Ever since I purchased my bug, the only number I have checked is the engine number and it ties up to the log book. What other numbers should I cross check and where on the body can I find them. A friend of mine had his car impounded, gave me a wake up call - I should have checked all this before I purchased the car

The chassis no.It should be on the tunnel,under the rear seat.

correct me if im wrong but some beetles only have a plate in the spare wheel compartment with a chassis nr on ,i made the mistake of getting a beetle ,only checking the nr on the plate because the car was full of loose parts couldnt get to check the tunnel ,nr on plate matched the papers ,but on the chassis i found a different number

Stamp the same number on the chassis, to avoid complications..If the car is stopped at a roadblock and numbers are checked, it would lead to unnecessary poo

Just yesterday, I was speaking to my panelbeater and he was saying that Metro Police pulled the disk off an Audi that he re-sprayed, because the car had a black roof and the rest of the car was white

I still have no clue how am I going to register the white Fastback

blitz theres already a number on the chassis [pan]that is different from the registration papers number,somewhere somebody replaced the pan with another one

So stamp the number which is on the papers onto the chassis

Think one must be carefull with chassis and engine numbers.

Once read that it is illegal to remove, modify or change a stamped chassis or engine number.If police suspect a number has been tampered with,(Different font,size,or any suspicion it hasnt been stamped by factory or police),they could confiscate the car and crush it.They would allso prosecute the guy who did it.

Up to around 1972 beetles had the chassis number on the chassis under the rear seat, and a plate rivetted behind spare wheel.Later models had it stamped only behind spare wheel.

Would think if it is late model,only remove rear number,smooth the surface,spray, smear some dirt over it and make sure it cannot be seen it has been done,maybe brush rubberising over the battery area and everywhere on pan around there.

Had problems with my bus engine number. luckely it was old and dirty otherwise they would have make me take it out.

I know of 2 incidents where dudes tried to get a police clearances on motors and turned out that they had been stolen at some point and had to be removed and left, the cars were not allowed to leave, In one case the dude stripped the motor right down and left only the block and the other left the sub assembly, be carefull. I had shit with my Spider, as the pan was shortened the area were the # is was welded up and with some reinforcement plate welded on close to it, they were not happy, the #'s matched the papers, but I still had to go and get new police # stamped on at my own cost.
