The "railing" that holds the engine rubber seal in place in my bug is rather crusty and stuffed...
Replacing the valance would be nice, but really, not muchg else is wrong with it, and '67 valances are not a Dime-a-dozen...
Is it possible to buy new railings somewhere and then weld them in, or can you recommend a metal shop in Jo'burg who could build me a new one and then weld it in?...
Cheers, N.

I've had good results with a small and a large screwdriver. Use the small one to remove the bits of hardened old rubber, and the large one to reshape the channel.
Much less radical than cutting and welding.

...problem is, there are chunks of the railing that simply don't exist anymore, so screwdrivers don't help me much there. :/
There is no rubber in place at the moment.

Not air cooled related, but I had to swop a destroyed caravan tyre with the my tow cars spare wheel tyre. All the tools I had with me were a Hunting knife and a large screwdriver.
Worse part was that I had pulled into a garage forecourt and not one of the staff offered to help or let us use the workshop facilities !
