If you have your motor turning over very slowly it could be that the starter is worn out and heading for failure, if it is new and does the same get a relay fitted, you can also get the starter from the early T2 buses that ran a T1 motor they are larger and have a little more torque, so I was told. When fitting a new starter make sure that the bush that fits into the box to support the starter is not worn out or missing completely, this will lead to premature starter failure. I had no problems turning over a 2021cc motor with 9.2 CR with a standard T1 starter.

It's in for repairs at the moment so I'll see what happens when I put it together again.
Is there a specific relay that must be used?

If thestarter isnt good enough, Ifound a Bosch starter at Diesel Electric in Parow, that is rated at 1.4kW and fits the stock beetle 100%.Dont know what the stock starter is rated at, but I have had one of these and they are great

I know this is gonna be difficult for you TonyZ but do you have access to the 10 digit part number? I spoke to Anthoy @ Diesel Electrical and he cant find a listing for it, but said he would do some homework for us IF we can give him the part number.

Get the starter from a 411 automatic or bus auto they are the strongest
Alternatively look for a starter with 4 brushes
I use a six volt starter on my test bench it is the strongest you can get
I machined the shaft down to 12 v size and used a 12v bendix and solenoid ( it has been working for 5 years now.)
