Not idling

Post by WooHaa »

hey There.

I think this is my second question on this forum.
Anyway, same beetle, 1600, 1975 model, she runs, but doesn't like idling. Had a carb kit put in, but still no idle.
where do I start?

Will do.

Today, I saw somthing interesting on the carb, if you open the deck lid, on the right side of the carb is a wire, that is connected to it, but the wire doesn't go anywhere. It has the words 12V engraved on it.
Does that wire go onto the coil?

That is the wire for the automatic choke. Yes, it does get a positive from the coil. When adjusted correctly, the auto choke closes the butterfly to ensure a richer mixture when the car is cold, it also has little teeth that leaves the throttle openin larger = higher idle speed.

Okay, I will re-connect that.
Does the idle drop after the car has warmed up?
If so how does it know when the car is warm. On a modern car, there is a sensor, but how does the bug know this?

The choke has a spring inside the round casing to the side of the carb that warms up as the car heats up, returning the butterfly to the normal position. Mechanical, but very effective.
