Steering colum with CitiGolf ignition

Like I hav said in my other post, I have a 1968/1969 Fastback. It has the Beetle door handles.

Now, the ignition is busted so my key doesn't turn in it.The other owners put in a cheap generic ignition switch, but I would like to use 1 key for the door locks and ignition.

Now, would an older (pre facelift) CitiGolf ignition switch fit in the steering column?What are other options?

First off the later post 68 fastbacks used what was essentially beetle bits in a type three only housing. thus 68 to 73 beetle bits would interchange.
were you to fit citigolf parts you would need everything from the golf as the handle assemblies uses 3 screws instead of four so the handles would also look a bit modern. as the type three uses the housing to mount the steering collumn to the car and theGolf uses the steering tube for a mount some mods are in order. This is not terribly difficult but as the steering on a car is critical dont skimp here. Later beetles are very similar to the golf but also not exact.

I'm going to be using the 411 flicker/wipe/ignition switch with the standard Type 3 column.

The earlier citi golf columns fit perfectly into a beetle. You keep your beeltle steering shaft and column/pipe but the rest is from the golf. The beetles pipe, where the ignition assembly mounts to, needs the a bit of filing and you will need to modify the wiring loom coming from the golfs controls.

The plus side is now you put in a electric pump for the window washes.

I and presently busy doing this conversion to my 181.

Do the late '70's Beetles have the same steering splines as the early Golfs?

Yes, enven the mid 90s had the same splines with an adapter for the steering wheel.

I have a MK1 GTI steering wheel for the '68 Fasty. It doesn't fit the splines. Will have to get a late model Beetle steering column and try that.

Did it the other way round.
I had a MK1 GTI thats steering got damaged and ended up fitting a SP Beetle steering wheel to it that I had lying around at the time.

Brilliant news for me. Instead of having the steering machined, I think that I should just get an SP/late model Beetle steering shaft....
