I have been promising to start this thread an just not getting around to it...but now I need some sympathy.
RUST RUST RUST............
I miss my beetle.....
So we have to continue....and chop it all out. Luckily I am building this thing to race so I'm not too worried about looks and will be welding in a cage so that should put some strength back...
But what was going to be a shortcut to a track car is probably going to take as long as converting a beetle OR longer...
So I will take some pics of the horror I have landed in, so you all can laugh and say you should have stuck to real VW

I've had a look at that car several times, and was under the impression the rust was minimal? But you might be lucky, there were more than 100 000 of those cars produced, they all rust at the same places, and so there is a lot of expertise in the field on repairing it. I love the orange 914 in the new Ultra VW that was converted to a 916 replica, you should have a look.
*Waits next to blitz for pics...* this is gonna be kwl anything with the word race car in is uber kwl...if you wanna see rust you must check my baja "rusty",enough said...
Here are some engine specs:
3 Liter type 4 ex off road race buggy engine..
I think might be a genuine american FAT performance version with 105mm nickies
and extra webbing welded to case as well as a 5th head bolt added.
78mm SCAT crank
Autocraft 2 stage dry sump
Dual 44 IDF webers
Porsche heads with dual springs and big valves-the seats almost touch each other..
Tall upright conversion with Porsche alternator/fan
should be good for 200+ hp
I am still considering running a 411 box upside down (will lowwer the engine) as it is the simplest conversion- and I have 2...although EMPI reckons he broke his with 137 kw - I won't be doing any drag racing and historic run rolling starts...if it breaks we modify the spare??

Where in Fuchs name did you find an engine like this??
Just lucky I guess...have been wanting to race a bug as long as I can remember and have been collecting bits for years...and when I saw this motor-(it was going to be going into the back of a nice IRS beach buggy)....I just kept mentioning it to the guy, and when he needed money to finish a Chev Silverado project he let me have it for R10 000,00
