Organising my tools?

I know this might sound like a pregnant woman preparing a baby room, but I am in the process of getting my workshop right to start some serious work on the SP2. I am sorting out all my tools, and wonder if someone has a clever suggestion to hang spanners up a wall? Keep in mind that mine are, although a pretty complete range of all the popular sizes, not all from the same manufacturer. I do not really want to go the 'hang 'em up between two nails hammered into the wall' route.

A proper toolbox is the way to go. You take your spanners/tools with you next to where you are working, and you can put 'em back STRAIGHT after you use them. Trust me, spanners tend to grow some feet and bugger off!

That is how I worked up to now, but I have recently moved to a safe environment with a nice working area, and I want to organise my spanners/sockets/screwdrivers at a central place in such a way above the work bench so that everything can be seen at a glance, and so that you will immediately see if something went missing.

Pine,Pine...Pine...The easiest way is to buy a piece of peg board and nailing it to a wooden frame. Some short medium and long pegs. You then arange and change your board to your needs, it's flat and easy accessable. If you need any tools or stuff let me know I get it cheap cheap. Your special or more expensive tools you lock up in a cubbord or a save place...not next to the lawnmower.....

Whichever way you go make sure the wood you use to hang the tools onto is a smooth syrface that can easily be wiped clean if needed, as over time it will get extremely dirty with finger marks oil etc.
I used a piece of melimine that was left over from my kitchen coabards, you can also use soft board but it's not easy to keep clean.
I have all the tools I need hanging on a board about 500x1700 with several sets of spanners pliers etc. more tools mounted that actually needed.
Before I bolted or nailed anything to the wall I laid out all the tools on the floor to get a feel for where things would fit, space things out with nice gaps in between. Get a staight edge to draw lines as to where you intend wacking in the nails where the spanners will be hanging off, do your homework.
After all the nails were waked in I hung up the melimine board with bushes & screws about 8 of them.
For the screw drivers you need a flat surface, Again I used a piece of melamine board and bolted onto the wall as if it were a small shelf 150x400. Plan before you drill holes for the screw driver shafts, set out the screw drives and drill holes in the "shelf" with the dia. slightly larger than the screw drivers shaft. When you mount the "shelf" to the wall don't mount it too low otherwise you will not be able to see the tip of the screwdrivers too nicely. For the "shelf" I bought 2 small brackets from the hardware. I will try take some pics.

Then the most common used on the board where you can see immed if one is still laying in the bonnet before the chiccy drive off with your TOOL

I like that setup, Rui! Your work station is a reflection of your work, so after seeing that I will buy an engine built by you with my eyes closed. My only little problem is that I have several spanners with open sides, no way to hang them up a on single nail??

I'm with cal looker on this one. I bought a HUGE sheet of MDF and made a wall mount, I don't like tool chests as if some stuff is missing, it's hard to see. One thing I'd change on Rui's set up. (rather do it on a sidewall so that you can't see it from the street).

I rawl bolted mine to the wall with heavy duty brackets cause there is a LOT of weight on there.

Could always drill a hole through the spanner?
