The best thing for a hang over is an overly friendly blond with big juggs. Does nothing for the hang over BUT is good for the eyes.... But knowing the type I've woken up with.... they always look better in the dark.AAAAAGGggg

At first it had a backfire through the left carb... It also sounded too loud at idle etc. I bet there's a manifold leak somewhere. Whistling on acceleration. I have to check the Ign timing, valve gaps and maybe make the heads a bit tighter. Also wants to die sometimes when you open the throttle.... I'll go back to the book tomorrow....too tired.... Makes an awesome sound though...

the more you enjoy the sound, the higher your fuel consumption and the quicker you get to where you are going

And with the fuel price that might be going down again I might have some time to enjoy it before the next hike
By the way. The machine shot messed up my one head so they replaced it (after I told them where to stuff the broken one). They gave me an AMC head that is even stronger than the original castings so I'm pretty happy with that....

Glad to see you have the carbs in and running, that whistling sound you hear is a sound the air does running thru the carbs, I wouldn't worry about that, follow the instructions in the book and take it from there, if it's poping then the carbs need balancing, it can at times be frustrating setting up the carbs, make sure that any adjustments you do must be done with the motor at running temp, so take it for a short drive round the block before you try set anything up. Very important to make sure you have no air leaks, use new gaskets, with a tad of sealant on manifolds, it helps. Remember what I told you about the oil level keep an eye on that or you could trash your motor in no time. Get it set the best you can, I would then recommend taking it in for a dyno tune.

Thanks Rui,
I sorted out the oil problem, changed all gaskets etc. Relocated the dipstick to next to the breather tower and filled up according to the manual. I think i'll chuck out the stock metal manifold gaskets. What do you reckon I use instead? I have those thick bakelite elring ones I can use or I can cut some from Flexoil..... what would work best?

YIP, dump the metal gaskets all they are good for is as a template to make paper gaskets, use some sealant (RTV) any gasket that is not metal is better, use the Erling ones you have. You can also get yourself a sheet of thick gasket paper (about 0.7mm thick) from a spares shop and make up your own using the old gaskets as a template, or using a small ball-peen hammer on the manifolds to cut their shape.
