Has anybody opened or serviced thier front axle tubes, mine havent been serviced or greased for 20 years. How does on go about servicing and cleaning all these parts. I have only done a king and link pin overall once before but i rekon after 20 years i must do a major overall. I have been told i will need a high pressure hose to remove all the old grease. Help anybody.
You will need to clean all that road grime off before you start. Just makes the job less messy. All I did was a clean up and pumped grease into the 'nipples'. The beam looks almost new! And works 100%
If you intend on stripping the front beam be prepared to get your hands dirty, I mean real dirty, get plenty rags, and use gloves, cause there is plenty of grease in the beam, there is no need to strip it down it if you just planning on re-greasing the nipples, there is not much one can do to redo a front beam, apart from changing the bearings and seals on the trailing arms. You can re-grease all the nipples fairly easy with a grease gun that should not cost you more than R100 for a manual grease gun, buy about 1L of bearing grease and fill the gun with the grease, make sure the nipples on the beam and stub axle are clean, and the little ball on the top of the nipple moves freely, you can clean then with thinners. Fit the end of the flexible pipe contraption of the grease gun onto the nipple it should just slide on, start pumping the gun until you see grease oozing out of the ends of the beam where the trailing arms join the beam, then you know you are done, do the same at the stub axle for the king & link pins, it is sometimes a fidlly job getting the grease gun off the nipples but don't damage the end buy using a pliers or something like that, just use your fingers, that is what I do.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......
A grease gun is a approx. R 16 at Mica if I recall correctly...bought one for a mate not too long ago.

Hardware, and it's associated stores are the Love of my father, not I.
"Dude! Check out my new grease gun, suppled by Adendorffs of Johannesburg. It cost a premium good Sir, and has 3 different end fittings painstakingly crafted by virgin Mongolian orphans."
"Mmmmhmmm; keeping up with the Faria's is a full-time job here in Larneyville."
Jus' kidding around mate.
