Cant get my bug to start again
Cant get my bug to start again
Hey guys
I have problem restarting my bug after she's just been switched off. I had a bit of overflow or flooding in the carb 1st which was caused by a faulty Needle & seed (which I replaced as well as some other things on the carb) Now when she starts it idles a bit then say after 5minutes ,revs drop and she dies out. This is when I restart and all she does is swing and swing without any ignition.
What do you guys make of that? Its making me crazy alreay cos I miss driving my bug stuck diving a fuelguzzling beemer....Not Cool!!!!!!

Is the idle jet blocked? On my carb it is on the right hand side. I found that because the car stood unused for a long time, this gooey rubbish gets stuck in it. Just cleaning that jet, got my bug idling.

Don't think so, If the carb has dirty jets it will at very least splutter and run rough. If it does not run at all it must be lack of spark. Check if your points did not close, sometimes it is not screwed down properly. I had points that broke on the outer spring, shorting directly onto the distributor's insides. =no spark. If the timing is way out it won't go either. Hope this helps

Sounds like an electrical problem, check to see if your coil is getting too hot it could be the cause of your problem similar thing happens when the condenser is on the way out. I say it again, a service is not expensive and can sort out many gremlins, when last was you ride serviced????
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......
Well did a self service about 2months ago. Oil, fuel & air filter, new plugs ,points and condenser. Didnt change dizzy cap ,rotor and leads though. The coil runs hot but touchable just after a short drive. After long periods she does get very hot almost not touchable. Is there a test I could do to check if that is the problem?

The coil does not give much warning before it greets you. Do you have another VW nearby to quickly swap the coil and check. Mine gave up the ghost on a run with Phenomenal Bugz VW Club.
There was spark, just it was very very poor quality and the coils was very hot that day!

When the coil gets to a point where you no longer can touch it, then the spark is getting weaker as the coil gets hotter, in extreme cases it will blow up, this happened to me before, it sounded like a bomb going off and then had smelly oil all over my motor, replace the coil.

I once heard a few words of wisdom that has saved me many hours of hunting for a problem...
"If you think its your carb, its not!"
Forget the carb, it gets filtered fuel thru it, fuel is also used as a cleaner....
Check the entire ignition syste, replace all the parts if you are not sure, plugs, points, condensor, rotor, cap, leads, get a spare "tester" coil.... then only when you are 100% sure its not the ignition, check the fuel system.
Filters, pull a pipe, is there good fuel flow (into a bottle) (checks if tank is blocked), check tank breather, check fuel pump....
then check the carb
I had a guy send in his carb for a R300 overhaul and clean... didnt help. I pulled his sparkplugs out and they were all old - it wasnt the carb!!!!
