Cold starts...
Is there a way to get a bug going a li'l better?
My bug, the old lady that she is, takes a short while to get going, after spluttering and coughing a bit. She'll jerk somewhat, and won't manage more than the smallest speedo notch before she's hot and willing to go.
Is this a normal bug thing, or can I adjust something or other?
My bus does not struggle with this issue hence me asking.

not normal. Try checing the entire ignition circuit before you play with the carbs. New plugs, plug wires, dizzy cap, rotor, points and condensor.
Check the timing, set it 100%, then check the battery....
I read a bit of advice once that is really good...
"If you think its a carb problem, it's not"
has worked for me many times until I changed to twin carbs and struggled to get them running properly.
Another thing, with the car idling when cold and when worm, spray quick start around all the inlet manifold joints and seals. Any change in the idle speed or sound will indicate a vaccuum leak. Maybe the rubbers are cracked and seal slightly when they are warm???? good luck and when you get annoyed have a

Hey guys,
I doubt anything needs replacing as it is a recent rebuild; 1,016 kms on the clock.
The engine is standard.
I'll get the thing checked to see if it is too lean; thanks.

Your fast idle / choke is not doing what it should, one of 2 things could be wrong, the choke is not set in it's correct position, there are marks on the carb/choke that should line up, or the heater element of the choke is faulty or not connected, once you sort this out you should have no more cold start problems.

and thanks to everyone from me as well:
my bug would not talk to me during cold-starts: just would not 'catch'
so, with rui's and tonis advice i found the culprit: da points!
now the cold starts are the sweetest experience ever.
remember the pre-internet times? i would have had to push the queen mum to the nearest mechanic. these days we switch on the computer to hunt down probable-problems....

Well, Rui had fun "playing" with my engine.
...now it's going like the clappers but it only seemed to behave itself for a day or two wrt to cold starts.
This morning the troubles were back...
Until it warmed up it was a very jerky ride, and it took some coaxing to rev up and get some power going...
What can I adjust to sort her out, Rui?
Thanks, N.

MTM, why not list what you have checked and that way we can give you a better solution, what we are doing is having a light saber duel while standing miles away from each other...good for fcuikng around pritty crappy for inflicting a mortal wound.......

I checked your choke, it's working, what must be happening is that it is set too high and is activated for too long, it should be fully deactivated within a few min maybe 2-3, we never get that cold here that the preheating of the air would be an issue. The choke needs setting, that is your problem.
