What I like about that pic is that it is SO proudly South African! (Unique SA body, Rostyles.)

But DOORS - on a BUGGY? It is like putting a trap door in a Schwimmwagen!

UPDATE!!

Just got back from the farm between Heidelberg and Meyerton to fetch the latest addition to the family. Couldn't get a tow bar for the Bus to date, so I decided yesterday afternoon to MAKE A PLAN  (no questions = no lies)

The buggy towed very nicely, but I lost a left rear wheel in Henley-on-Klip, a castle nut (which I didn't check  ) came loose and disappeared. Luckily at a 90 degree turn, at a very low speed. So I put the wheel back, put a thick nail through the hole, and drove another few km's till I saw a plot with some Beetles. Thanks to a friendly guy called Chris (nope, a different one!), I got another Castle nut for the axle, put it back on (with the nail through the hole again) and towed the Buggy home.

It seems to be a 'Sand Shark' indeed, and not a 'Kestrel' as I thought at first. Thanks Tom Bishop for the info. At this stage I don't know if the engine is running, time will tell, but the whole buggy needs a lot of work. The immediate plans are to get it running first, then make it an off-road weekend toy. Thanks once again Teresa for the GREAT gift! :hangloose:

Thanks guys, I feel like a little boy on Christmas eve!

H_R, the rear bumper is attached to the gearbox bracket, it will be taken off anyway.

I just started the buggy! It must be the first time in almost 5 years. Checked the oil, connected a battery to the coil and starter, as well as the Facet pump in a can of petrol - and she started!!! Idled for about 5 minutes - a lot of crap came out of the exhausts, and the engine actually sounds good. The Cowley's are stuffed, so you can imagine the noise...
No brakes and no seats, so unfortunately no ride around the block, but soon...

Well done Pine Good things do happen to good people...

If you really want to have fun before you remove the engine cut the Cowleys about 20-40cm into the baffle just below the welded flange, Remove the baffles and you know have a 75mm free flow exhaust  :jumping: :jumping: :shoot:  ...It sounds amazing and the flames you see are quite spectacular.... I had 2 sets of Cowley trumpets on the DarkSide and I know how load they get when they go...

Hang onto that seatcover with all your might....

Hi Pine,
My first buggy was a Kestrel. Ugly as sin but a much stronger body than Beamish. Mine had a 1300cc twin port engine and it was painted blue (with a brush), hence it was called Blou Gemoerte. Anton from the Wildbuggers still has photos of it. Best 2X4Xfar! Great off road, I loved it.

Ja-ja, Facet pump in can of petrol. Exactly the way my Ghia got toasted, even to the make of the pump. Be very careful! We handle petrol so often we get lekker mak with it, so I told the guy. Next thing my pride and joy was a heap of crap and I was 120k in the hole.

Enjoy the bug, they are great those Kestrels.

I see "Aircooledwannabe" has one of those Action beach buggies, looks a lot like my Mini-T except for the rear fenders.

Oops, yes, Sand Shark... Nic had one. He and I had some adventures together until he flipped his upside down. Then he put a Beamish body on it and that is how Jacuzzi came about. I'm sure the Kestrels and Sand Sharks are closely related, as well as those ugly, sorry, ..er.. remarkable bakkie versions, one of which I see regularly in Tableview.

I google-d but came up empty. Anybody got more info?

Nice one Pine. Unfortunately I still like your bus with the fuchs more! What happened to your bus' rear bumper or shouldn't I ask? "(no questions = no lies)"
The only substitute for cubic inches are more cubic inches.
