One for the sound boys...

Post by Merlin »

's up?

My bug is running some fancy-azz deck in it with all the bells and whistles and what-not.

Nope, I know jack about sound...

My bug also runs very hard suspension and when I spin CDs, they jump terribly...

Is this something that I can fix, or do I need to replace my deck with some new-fangled one with buffering - or what?

Thanks, N.

2 things...

1) make sure the deck is horizontal or close to it.

2) it may have a "read ahead" or "anti-skip protection", make sure these are on.

If neither of these work, try mounting the deck on rubber mounts, so as to cusion the bumps

These days you can buy Radios that use external memory sticks that plug into a USB socket on the front of the radio. Sony also have a new deck that has 1Gb of storage built into the removable face.
Just load your MP3's and you have hours of music.
No moving parts and therefore no skipping.

Good to know Rick, but as I'm concentrating on fixing my bus', sound upgrades are WAY down my list of priorities. :) One for the future though...

Tony...

1. The deck is horizontal.

2. I do not have the manual for the deck, but I have checked all of the menu options and there is nothing like that. I'll see if there any switches or anything like that on the deck exterior this weekend.

I'll take a look this weekend at alternative mounting options...thanks for the tip. :)

your deck should not move at all when the car goes over the ruff stuff... where is it mounted?

If there is play when you move it with your hand it will jump even with the anti skip protection on.

I made a proper console out of aluminium. There is also always a mounting strap for the back of the unit that they provide(metal strap with holes and slits in) the one end goes on the bolt on the back of the unit and the other you mount somewher on the body also with a bolt and nut or self-tapping screw(try get the strap as horizontal as possible).... if you find that it starts skipping after some time either of the nuts might have loosened themselves....

Kewl; I'll check that out asap Eben.

I've no idea how it is mounted now.

It is mounted straight into the dash where you would have found an OG deck.

I suspect it's (dash) been cut to fit a modern deck (size!).

Thanks! :)

I've just checked, hastily, in the basement and am very confused as to what they did...

There is no strap whatsoever.

The deck, it looks to me, is mounted in a metal cage which then fits somehow into a plastic bit which occupies the hole in the dash.

Plastic bit > Metal 'cage' > rear half of deck...

I'll have to figure out how to remove it, and then replace it...

That metal cage is used to slot the CD player itself into, make sure that all of the metal tabs have been folded back that can be folded back and that the cage is rock solid. Also on the back of the radio there should be a screw or a threaded rod sticking out. You'll have to look at sucuring that to the body of the car somehow. Plumbers strap works pretty good.

I had a CD player in my beetle, but had it in the glove compartment in a custom holder. It mounts MUCH morte solid and hides it 100%.

...I don't have a cubby hole at present. :)

Need to get one, but R250 for a piece of palstic is a bit steep.

I've got an idea about mounting it to the ashtray bolts with a bracket, but I need to work on other things first. :)

We also thought that plumber's strap might work, and I think we have some around the garage somewhere.

You can't see my deck anyway. I'l show you next time we meet.

In all likelihood my bug will go up for sale in a few months anyway as I'm going after my long-term bus project...

Thanks, N.

no problemo

I hear what you say, I turned down 3 other busses so that I can take on this oval of Pine.....VERY long term project. Once the bus is up and running I'm going to drive it with all of it's patina for a while as I have a feeling I'm going to be using it to pick up spare parts for the oval.......

I've now owned KGs, and driven OG and mod'd bugs and at the end of the day nothing makes me happier than climbing into a bus.

I'm going after my dream bus, and it will be full custom, but don't expect to see it for years to come. Seriously.

I've found the perfect base, which has no chance of OG again (no guilt.) and now it's a matter of convincing the owner to sell...

ditto.....I love the busses..........but since I sold my old 1970 beetle, I've been itching to get my hands on something older..........

Anything I do to the oval at this stage will be an improvement.................so I hear you.
