The Sandshark was moulded in Parow, Cape Town. It was produced by the original Glitterbug guys after their Glitterbug moulds were lost in a fire.

Here is a pic of the Sandshark my Dad built. He never liked the bulky windscreen so made a thinner Stainless one. This pic must be a good 30+ years old.

Thanks for the pic Tom! If you click on the pic to enlarge it, it looks like '80' on the 3rd party disk. Any more pics of the buggy? What wheels did it have on? Come to Belville and Cee Whyyyyy

Hey! You've finally picked it up

I see that few of us forum guys are cursed when towing things! Luckily, the whole Buggy didn't rip off and go crazy

I like the styling of this mould, I hope that you're going to make this one orange as well? I would be interested in the wheels if you're going to change them

Tom, did you ever find out about your bug Big Toe? Remember I sent you that pic of my boet's father-in-laws one? And is the Kestrel related to the Sand Shark. I heard the Kestrel came from PE?

A few more pics -

The buggy had this weird gear knob, it seems to be a small (real) crab cast in clear resin. It is available to the first one who wants it, it freaks Teresa out  (see 'Give-Aways')

Image

The blue aluminium fan belt cover has a 'Bell 1' logo on it - does anyone know what it means?

Image

It is quite different to the bling-bling one I bought at Ferdie's (thanks Rui  )

Image

The steering wheel suffered from a Staffie that loved riding in the buggy many years ago - but hated it standing still!

Image

Replaced the steering wheel with exactly the same one, another R 10 lucky swop meet find (Thanks Kobus VWSport Club  )

Image

The 'hubcaps' of the Smiths wheels have two different logos.

Image

I will donate the set above to Madonna

Well, you have to start somewhere - at least you have a freaky gear knob now!

Image

But it's not all 'up, up and away!' yet - the blue buggy needs A LOT of work, most important being the non-existent brake system, and spaghetti wiring.

I was surprised Sunday to see it has a single Weber 36 carb - I don't have any experience of Webers, but it would be an interesting learning curve!

I'll touch everything else but wiring! That is one area that I have no knowledge of

Is that Weber a 36DCD? Like the ones you bought a while ago?

It seems like the same carb. I knew nothing 'bout wiring myself, but if one sticks to the correct colour coding and you use an existing VW harness - it's basically 'plug 'n play'. Get a coloured wire chart, and study it carefully with a magnifying glass - follow all the routes of the wires on the chart with a pencil and a see-through ruler, and you will understand it a lot better!

That makes a lot of sense...

*blitz goes to overcome his fear of PO-hacked wiring*

You bet, Dubster! A buggy is the most fun you can have without growing hair on your hands

Keep us updated on yours, and lemme know what you need to complete your rebuild. At least you'll have a 'ZN' plate on your buggy, a 'GP' plate looks just WRONG
