Chris you don't mess around, do you? Nice going. Was the DC originally AC?
The only substitute for cubic inches are more cubic inches.

Interesting location for the alternator on the AC... Did you relocate it there or did you get it like that?

It is a early '84 and the vents in front were add on's.So I think it is was an aircooled.

It is a 2 litre engine and I thought it is where it goes.

Maybe on a later model engine....
Mine is mounted on the fan-shroud. You can see it below getting air from the fan.
Its the back half of the case and upside down of course :)

Think the differrent position alternator was used from 1980 onwards in the square shape combis, (T25 in Britian, "Vanagon" in USA,) with differrent sealing tinware.(Maybe for combi models that only had engine access from the top in the new body shape).

Some models had a fan for interior heating that was driven from the alternator shaft.(Slighty different fanhousing, with no outlets to heat-exchangers. Square port exhaust heads, hydraulic cam followers ,different closed crankcase breather. Oil pickup inside case also different. Distributor had Hall effect electronic sensor.

"T25 shape" Doublecab and singlecab bodies that originally had AC engines had three rows of engine intake air vents on each side, while 1900 WC models only had 1 row of air intakes each side.(IIRC).
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Slighty different fanhousing, with no outlets to heat-exchangers
And that's the fan shroud that I'm looking for........
