Carb repair?

OK, so I've tried everything I can think of [bug]...

I still smell fuel occasionally, the consumption is crazy, and it struggles big time when it's cold for a long, long time...

The filter is clean, the choke is working, etc.

Who can you recommend to repair/restore carbs in Jo'burg?

Would I be better off replacing the entire carb?

replace the carb rather, I struggled for zonks with my old one on my bus, the kit cost me about R150 and then I spent a day getting it dipped and cleaned and rebuilt.......there was a bit of play in the butterfly, so I knew it's days were limited.

Rui's bud had that weber a while back..................an idea for you.....

I'll check around cost-wise...

I'm not keen to spend on a Weber right now.

My bug at the moment is annoying me intensely, and at the end of the day it's just transport. I'm concentrating on my bus', so costly upgrades on the bug are out.

Rui: What sort of price am I looking at for a stock carb?

R1000 for rui's set-up with the manifold.............a new solex/ brosal is more than that.......

lol........nah it's not that bad.........buy a kit and try that option first, it's not rocket science to over-haul a beetle carb.......just have the linkage checked for play to see if it's worthwhile...........

The more I drive KGs and bugs the more I Love my bus', and even though I like the fact that it's a sunroof bug, I'll probably end up selling it, and ultimately possibly even my bus' in order to fund my dream s/c...

I hear you dude, my eventual idea is to fix up the oval, get it to exactly where I want it and then either sell or trade so I can get my speedster............

Repairing an old carb will buy you a little more time before it needs replacing anyway, what they do is fit a new rebuild kit clean things up a little then re-bush the shaft, you will be looking at about R450 to R500, speak to frank at Supercarb in JHB 334 8036. A new Solex/Brosol will cost you about R1300, I have one of those carbs if you are interested, the carb has less than 5000 km on it, I bought it in new 3 years ago and has been on several of my motors for running in purposes and still looks brand new, I will take R700 for it if you're interested.

That Weber with the manifold has gone back to it's owner, I actually had it sold, but that so called mate of mine decided not to come thru on a deal I had with him, so I gave him his carb and manifold back so that he could stick it up his ass, Idiot.

what most ppl forget is that most beetle carbs are over 30 odd years old as well.

OK, an update...

The fuel smell is unrelated. I traced it to a leaky fuel cap. I need to reseal that gasket under the cap...

We've adjusted that carb every which way an still it struggles...but...

It now does not seem to struggle in the cold in the way of hesitation like it used to, so the choke is sorted out.

The carb is not worn, in response to this thread.

It dies when cold, but soon warms up...

The problem underneath it all it seems, is a flat spot.

It is far worse in 1st gear, but is present in all the gears.

I simply cannot pull away slowly, or smoothly. It needs lots of fuel, and clutch slippage to avoid a big hesitation.

I've driven the two other bugs at Home and they do not react the same.

This particular problem is no different when hot or cold.

What else can I check, anyone?

The sale on my Solex/Brosol carb is pending (Fig).
It sounds to me that you have a blocked pump jet or the pump is incorrectly set up and not dumping the correct amount of fuel into the carb when it needs it hence the hesitation & then the pick up (flat spot).

What distributor are you running? And is your engine single or twin port?

I have cured a nasty flat spot by replacing the condensor.
