A tip for you guys who dont adjust as regularly.... pull up your handbrake lightly before you use your footbrake if you need full power braking in emergencies and your brakes need adjusting...... it brings up the pedal a lot. :D

...and for those of you with rusty floorpans, do a Fred Flintstone.

Caterpillars with retread soles seem to work quite well.

Rui, Just recceived the disc conversion kit. My bug is in for bodywork and respray, so I cannot check dimensions.

Do you have the code for the bearings to order them?

The bolts. 6 X Countersunk, do you have the length they must be?

I am going for the smaller VW Golf caliper. Got pads already. Only if I battle to find them I will go for the bigger ones.

Update:

The disc brakes have been fitted about a week now. I traveled on the N1 towards Paarl yesterday, and the traffic slowed for some roadworks. I did not not notice until the Merc and Honda in front of me stood on their brakes. :o Speed was about 110km/h. I stepped on the brakes and slowed to about 40km/h in a very pleasingly short distance. :D

I am flippen impressed my Cousin!!!!!!

Thanks Rui, they work great!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) and they did not lock up, happy about that 'cause I used the bigger caliper. I could not find the small ones.

see, they paid themselves off already, now you just have to convince the wife, that you just saved 5grand, so you should be able to spend half of that on improving the saftey of the car further... start collecting parts for a engine fast enough to run away from hijackers

No doubt about a disk conversion, the best investment you can make. Good to see that you're impressed, I told you it would be like night and day.
On the same note, about 2 months ago a dude I know fitted a golf 2L to his bug running EFI and a few other mods, he spent some $$$ on his bug, he was telling me about all the stuff, when I asked him what he has for brakes, he tells me he runs all stock drums and they work just fine no need for disks, I tell him his crazy, he must get disks, I let him know the costs involved and that it is a worthy investment going disks, he gave me the cold shoulder.
The best part is I find out last week that he trashed the bug after his brakes failed, the cylinder in the slave cylinder in the front drum popped out due to worn drums/shoes, SUCKER he is.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

When I had drums I would adjust them when I had to pump the brakes more than 3 times.... It was good practice for when I needed to use the Kadens Bracking System....

Tony when are you back behind the Boerewors cirtain?
