Hi All
1600tp in a beach buggy, new plug leads other distributor and recon carb.
Timing is supposed to be set at 5deg ATDC with strobe light and both vacuum hoses connected.
I set the timing there - set the carb according to http://www.vw-resource.com guide to set the carb. but the car wont idle and and does not accelerate smoothly
Done a compression test and all is well - also checked the valves 3 times
I don't know what to do, please help
Thanks
Renier

I did check for the vacuum leaks as well - and new gaskets on the intake, new rubbers and gaskets on the carb

Twin port South African engines usually are set at 7.5deg before tdc static or at idle with vacuum advance disconnected. Check that it advances to about 30 deg btdc at max rpm with vac hose disconnected.
Older vacuum only advance distributors from the sixties must only be used with the 30PICT and 28PICT carbs, the vacuum signal is different from these carbs. Those single port engines are usually set at 10 deg btdc static.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Seriously!what am I doing wrong?
From this post I can't tell if you have SOLEX carbs or not, but experience taught me to check:
1) The fuel cut-off valve/s - it must open to idle (on solex carbs) so it must have power on it with the ig on.
2) Blocked idle jets.
I'm no expert, but I had to fix these several times on my Beetle.

I think Dawie hit the nail on the head... You said that you did the timing with the vacuum hose connected, this needs to be dis-connected when you do the timing set at 7.5deg... It should solve your problem...
