Getting away from it all

Post by Pine »

Teresa and I have decided last night that we've had it, and that we need a break away from Gauteng. Packed the Bay through the night, and left a few hours from daybreak towards Namibia and further North. SMS'ed our bosses that they can stick their jobs where the sun doesn't shine. Crossed the border this afternoon, and have just hit the first dunes. The GSM signal is very weak at this point, so I thought I'll quickly post these pics before we lose all contact from the civilised world. Hell, it worked for Fig and Gisela - and that is why we are doing it ourselves now. Only worry at this stage is that I currently have only one spare, 20 liters of Shell's finest LRP, and two pints of oil...

Looks like some mine dumps in Gauteng :?

Or is that just me being me?

Nah, you got that right! :hangloose:

City Deep mine dump, a mere 7km from my home, pics taken an hour ago.

But the 'getting away from it all' idea is getting increasingly more attractive...

Well done, Blitz

PS thanks for the kind words, Bob

I believe the old mine dumps in and around Johannesburg are often used by film crews for all those budget 'desert dunes' shots. I drove past it this afternoon and quickly stopped for the pics. With the recent rain and wind we had, the 'dunes' are smooth with no tracks, and so I managed to create a desktop wallpaper for my pc for the next few days

This Jetta CLi 16V ad was shot at a Gauteng mine dump as well, they used 'imported' live camels. The 'missile' was a radio-controlled aeroplane, note how wide the wings are in the in-flight shots

Hahahahaha... those "dunes" dont come close to the REAL Namibian dunes! But atleast you got the weak gsm signal spot on :-)

Thanks NamMan!

Let me tell you a little secret - if you carefully remove the orange inner part of your standard indicator lenses with one of those small jeweller's flat screwdrivers, you have factory-made clear lenses! It will take you about 2 minutes per lens and cost you absolutely nothing.

....I'd love to see the Nam dunes in real life some day

It's beautiful. My parents stayed in Kombat, close to grootfontein for 6 years. I'll go live there anyday.

Yeah thats what i thought... i tried it on my lenses much earlier in the year but decided to just leave it cos the lenses arent looking too shabby, the rubbers are perished and theres some minor cracks. I will definitely do it to my new lenses when i get round to saving enough money to order some new ones ... which wont be anytime soon with the exchange rate the way is now :x
