Slow windscreen Wipers

I am not sure if we have spoken about this. My '71 has sloooow wipers and even if the revs climb it still too slow to clear the water away. Both speeds seem to be the same. I find my head following the moving wiper to get a glimpse of the world as best I can. Can it sped up? and how?

The wiper mechanism is packed with grease that gets old and crusty with age. Remove the motor and dismantle the part with the gears in and clean and relube.

That should make a difference.

Of course, this is all assuming your wiper motor is correctly connected and all connections are good.

especially the spindles(where the two shafts come through the bodywork to connect to the wiper arms) need some oil or lithium grease.... mine went slow as well one time.. One or two drops of oil did the trick... the oil will disappear though after some time so its best to take it appart when you have a chance and do the grease thing.

Thread hijack...

Is it hard/expensive to source wipers motors, and more importantly, are bug wipers the same as those in a Fleetline, Fig?

My wiper spindles are worn, so the wipers do not sit where they should...

Thanks guys. I just had the car at an auto electrician for new ignition switch and connected the wipers. (The old ignition switch was a non-vw, after market 'under dash' type thing with soldered connections.)

They also connected up the windscreen wiper terminals to the new stalk mechanism. (Previous owner fitted a disgraceful dash pull effort, also non vw part, that did not work!) Now I will 'fix' the wiper motor.......

does this stop......ever?

I lost the circlip that holds the wiper mechinism to the motor and couldn't find another one. So I came up with a bril plan.....

Rain-X and a squigy!

The Rain-X is amazing, water of a ducks back

you will never have to use your wipers again..... Now you ask why the squigy

Well when you run out of Rain-X and you are court in a cloud burst....

open the window and use the squigy to wipe the water away

Ok your arm gets wet but hay you can see where your going...

I drove like this for well I still drive like this.....well not really I have not driven in the DarkSide this Millenia!!!

But it does work well...

can just picture you in a rainstorm with the manual wiper mode activated

open the window and use the squigy to wipe the water away

Update:

The whole mechanism was taken out of the car. I cleaned out the old grease out of the gears, cleaned the spindles. New grease and plenty lubricant on every moving part. HUGE improvement.

I have now found that the wipers slow down a bit, only when the headlights are on as well . The battery is not 100% and will be replaced soon. I ma going to fit a larger battery to run future sound system...

Its great to see in the rain, and its safe!
