I fitted the front disks on Saturday and found with the wheels on, my front track is about 2" wider than the body allows. I either need to widen the from mudguards or narrow the suspension.

Now how many of you out there have narrowed front beams. What all involved??

quite alot of modding is involved to get the motor sorted, which put me a little of the idea of running a subaru beast.

So. Today I go gut vol of work. Went next door to garage and told my staff that I am missing.

I raised the motor and gearbox 63mm. Now the chassis is still nice and low but the rear wheels are perfectly straight (I hate that conked out look. it looks like the motor is about to fall on the floor.) and the motor now has decent ground clearence.

You will also see It has sold mounts. This will be an occasional car so I recon the vibrations will be part of the fun.

Hey Chris,

I where in St Francis Bay in the Beginning of this month. Drove up on the Monday started work, finished Wednesday night got into my car Thursday morning and drove home.

Nearly went to PE. I had finished work for the day, it was 1am and I really needed a chocolate. I asked where I could find a Kitkat chunky. They told me PE.

On Wednesday evening about 8pm I wanted to fill my tank. I asked where the Petrol station was. They told me it closed the same time as the Spar and 8 till late. 6:30 pm.

I found out yesterday I will be in J-bay on 12 Dec. Installing another restaurant in the new mall. This time I will fly into PE and drive down. I am sure we will be able to meet up.

How does lifting the GB affect gear selection?

Well, the shifting rod now runs above the tunnel on the out side. You will see in the last pic that the gear lever will now be housed in an external box above the tunnel.

The handbrake will have to be relocated or changed to hydraulic but that might be a problem for RWC.

Hi there Tom,
Hydraulicly operated hand brakes should not be an issue with the roadworthy people. After all most small planes have an hydraulic park brake system

Tom, why cant you just make a link between the gear shift lever in the original position and the gearbox in the new position? The way I see it the only difference would be that 1st will be old 2nd, 2nd will be old 1st. 3rd will be old 4th and 4th will be old 3rd. Reverse will be down and forward.


Or am I mad.

Tom has not turned or done any thing wild he has just lifted the box so the easiest is to raise the gear rodbush assembly to the same hight,this means that all the gears are still in their original spots
I have seen in some pics before that the guys channel the Tunnel and run it at a very shit angle but the problem is that You weaken the chassis to much, so what Tom is doing is 100% right

I see all my pics were deleted from the Wild Buggers Web site. Suppose they need the space and I’m not a member any more. Seems Final. They still thought RIP bug was photo worthy.

Here are the Pics of the bug so far. They are in no Order.

History:
2004 had been a tough year for me. I had changed the whole way my business worked, released a totally new / rewritted version of my software and my family life was shot after having spent most of the time in Joburg only coming home every 2nd month for about a week.

At the time I was a member of the Wildbuggers and the weekend before Xmas 2004 was there off-road run.

Long story short......
We had a good Saturday riding the dunes in Worcester and a good evening at the braai, maybe best I experienced so far. On The Sunday I left early. I wanted to get home as it was my daughter birthday.

The ride was good, again best ever. My body was sore from the day before riding and the head was not much better from the braai, But the air was warm and I felt good. I still remember thinking to myself “Could life get better than this”.

About a Kilometre before the tunnel the motor died, it started spluttered and died. I started it again and it gave a hollow back fire. My son (13 at the time) shouted SHlT FIRE and jumped out.

I lost everything. The complete bug, wallet, glasses, drivers. Fridge ...... I have an idea what squatter feel like after fire has run through there shacks. It was the largest fire I ever Made. The mark is still on the tar where this loss occured. I have though of stopping there with my other projects, tramping on the devils tail, but I'd rather not tempt fate, give him a wave and ride by.

So I had no buggy and it was time to build a new one. My Idea at the time was to build a buggy based on Syncro running gear but it was pricy. Instead I ended up buying a buggy in Hermanus which was OK to drive to Cape Town but was buggered as I found out later. Funny thing just about every bug I looked at, the owner told me the motor had been re- done ?? Months ago. My motor got me to Cape Town but was bad.

I stripped the bug to get it straight and put it together quickly. It was acceptable but not OK for Me. Then I found the Subaru motor and decided this motor should go in this red bug. In the meantime I found a second hand Immpi Body and though I would quickly build this one to go on the Dec2007 Wildbuggers 2000 km Ride. How long could this take. It was a long wheel base.

Suebrew took the back seat and I quickly found a Baja to use as a donor for the immpi. The problem with me is Quickly and Build don’t go together. I tried to slap something together but I Can’t. This Quickly took 18 month and BigToe was built. Again spending more than what it is worth today.

With BigToe built 2008 was going to be Suebrews year but I bought a 181. The 181 was rough and because it was the better investment it got preference. Suebrew took the back seat once again and 2008 rolled by.

The 181 is almost finished and I want the Suebrew build to start in June this year 2009.

This project is 4 years old. If it doesn’t get done this year I am aborting the Project. Let’s see what happens.

Like I told you I have my eye on another non VW project. If it comes through this project will be aborted.
