Your work really looks good. Heaps of effort in these pics.
You can buy a new steering shock for under R200 (if I remeber correctly). I Bought one a couple of months ago from Volkspares.

Re: 58' Karmann
The early cars didn't have a steering shock. Nothing wrong with putting one on, in fact it should be an improvement.PesVis wrote:Why, whats wrong with the steering shock?

Yeah well it's going to be my daily driver so the steering damper will be a good addition.

Re: 58' Karmann
Your dad fitted those fat 356 rims on my Ghia today to see if they would fit. Damn it looks good!

Yeah, I can imagine! I'm busy with a bit of a internal struggle about the wheels. Either the rostyles or the porsche 356(if someone hasn't robbed them off my dad by then

Now that I think about it, didn't you say you had the longer beetle sideshafts? Did those rims actually fit?

Re: 58' Karmann
Ok so the popo has hit the fan.
My dad did a bit of research about registering an LHD car. Turns out a LHD can only be registered if you are a classic car club member and you aren't allowed to have passengers. So we are back to square 1 and will convert the rust bucket we originaly started out with to RHD. This also means the beautiful suspension and floor pan is useless, so all the work was for nothing for now.
My dad will probably use it when he builds the other body to a show car

Re: 58' Karmann
Register with a classic car club, and then register your lhd cabby and carry passengers any way,a cop is less than likely to do the relavent paper work associated with a ticket for something like that

Just replace the dash with that of a post-'60 ghia. Luckily we have a RHD floorpan, but its got a lot of rust. My main disappointment is the work we've already done that is now useless

Re: 58' Karmann
Can't you just fit the pedal assembly from a RHD beetle? I would think everything else are mirrored on the floor pan.
As for the front suspension; move the steering box to the right, the tie rod that ran to the right can then be flipped to run to the left. The steering column should fit with minor alterations, if any.
Fit the dash from the RHD car you have and presto, a RHD KG.

Re: 58' Karmann
If its Similar to the beetle setup then it should be mirrored.
A friend once bought a beetle from a driving school that had left and right steering and pedals. It was a converted LHD so the right must have been add-on. Knew this cause you could see the original colck were on the left and then reinstalled on the right. He removed the LHD and installed a RHD suspension, replaced the dash with RHD.

Re: 58' Karmann
Just a few extra holes for the pedals on the floor, and the brake silinder.
