If had it with timing my bug! I need to find out what type of dizzy I have so I can figure out how to time the thing. One thing I do know is that it has a vac. adv. & I think that's it. I can get all the numbers on the dizzy (Bosch) & search the Web but does anyone know of a list of dizzy numbers & their corresponding characteristics. Thing is this - if I have a vac adv. dizzy only, then what on God's Green Earth or what within the mechanics of the engine will advance the timing if I disconnect the vac. hose when using a timing light?
I had a vac advance only dizzy once... tossed it out.
The dizzy is generally referred to by its last 3 Bosch numbers... i.e. xxxx xxxx xxxx 009 is the 009 dizzy (dont count the X's, I have no idea how many there are)
Thanks TZ - so are you saying that xxxxxxx... 009 indicates a vac adv. dizzy? I have read that the svda is the right dizzy for a 34 PICT 3 & think this is where the problem lies.
My 1600 Beetle still has the standard SVDA Distributor (Bosch, I think), and she is running good. I think the fuel economy and power isn't exactly where it should be, but the car gets me from A to B without any problems. No misses, No stalls, No Power loss under heavy load, No hesitation when accelerating, Nothing.
I'd suggest to get the SVDA dizzy, since that is the correct one to use with a Solex 34 pict 3 carb.
never said that... in this case, a 009 is a purely centrifugal dizzy only.
set up the timing light
Pull off the vac hose, rev the car. Does it adv? If not, then wither the weights are stuck or it doesnt have the cnetrifugal adv
Cuck on the vac hose (attached to the dizzy, not the carb). The timing should adv - this tests if the vac can still works.
Pretty much and dual vac and centrifugal adv dizzy is the best dizzy for any and all applications. I once had a spec sheet of every dizzy made for the T1 and the specs are not that much different from one to the other. Which is why I used the 070 and 039 dizzy for ages even though people said they were not the right dizzy, but they were practically the same as the dizzy that I "should" have used....
Apologies for the long post - The information below tells you what distributor you should have and you should be able to identify what engine your distributor was originally from. Hope this helps.
Important Note! The listing for this distributor appears ONLY in the Bosch References and does not appear in any Volkswagen Tune-Up References, nor in their Parts Microfilms. It may have been a "Service Replacement".

Can Use: VW 113-905-205AL, Bosch 0231 146 101, VW 043 905 205, 0231 170 034 (German)
Notes: This is the Mexican manufactured version of the original 043 905 205 Distributor, originally used on 1974 Federal Manual Transmission Beetles. This was used on Mexican production Beetles early on before they switched to Electronic Ignition (year periods are unknown, but I believe it was sometime in the 80s). This distributor comes with a Single Vacuum Can is essentially a carbon copy of the original German made model. It uses all of the same components of the original German Distributor except the Condensor as noted below. Timing specs are the same as well and have not changed.
This is THE Distributor to use on your stock engine w/Solex 30PICT-3, H30/31PICT Series or 34PICT Series carbureted 1600 Beetle thru 1974 (75-79 w/Carb) & Type 2 1600 thru 1971. It is NOT recommended for use with the 30PICT-1 or 30PICT-2 because the vacuum signal is incorrect for the vacuum assist to work properly. This Distributor is essentially a "009" with a Vacuum Advance Assist to help prevent hesitation in all of those Stop-n-Go situations in city traffic. The Mechanical Advance takes over out on the highway to provide the most excellent Advance Curve in all sorts of engine loads. If you're running an original Dual-Vacuum Distributor on your Beetle 71-74/Type 2 1971 application(s), you will need to cap off the "Retard" Vacuum Port located on the rear of the Carburetor. Available new from a number of VW Parts Suppliers.
This distributor is similar to but should not to be confused with the "Bruck Germany" Distributor being sold by a number of outfits. In actuality, this is a Chinese knock-off of the Bosch Mexican "034" and the reliability of this distributor has not yet proven itself IMHO. Let the buyer and user beware!

(Note: Models timed at 12.5 BTDC usually required high octane gasoline)
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-11 deg Adv (approximate). Centrifigual: 15-21deg @ 4200rpm
Distributor notes: This was a unique distributor installed on the "S" Models in 1964. At first glance it looks like a Beetle 36hp "cast-iron" distributor with a push-on (not screw-on) vacuum advance unit (and it does use the 36hp points). In addition the centrifigual advance was a dual weight model, while most other VW models using centrifigual advance used single weights. Dual weights do allow for better power through all acceleration modes and it's a shame VW didn't continue it. Having owned a 64 Notchback 1500S, I was impressed at the response of this distributor throughout the powerband even when I upgraded to a fresh 1600 engine. Even though used only one year and some parts like the cap and vacuum can are hard to find, I whole heartily recommend this distributor for any carburetted Type 3 application, whether for sport or every day driving use.

Thanks for all the info !!I took my dizzy apart today & guess what I found? - ONE spring at the bottom of the dizzy. The thing looked like a Staffy got hold of it. I suppose those weight were flying outward from the moment the engine started so setting the timing correctly was impossible. I managed to rebuild a dizzy from a Bosch 0231 170 017 (used on some Ford model), slapped it in late this afternoon & it does the basic stuff. Tomorrow it's "timing time" so we'll see if I have the problem sorted out. Hope this works since Calooker informed me that a new SVDA costs around R2300-00 - ouch.
