1) Think the nut diameter is smaller on later ones. Not sure though,long ago i came across that. Later type was easier to adjust.

Hope Murphy stays away from the buggy.

On that Cocacola buggy,the fibreglass part between the front and rear wheels may help aerodynamics slightly. Theoretically at least.
How about a "safari windscreen" , like a kombi? Does some buggies have that?

Dawie, I think an open 'safari' window can only be used at low speed (i.e. Split top speed), so perhaps a buggy is too fast?

Haven't seen it on a buggy before though, although I have seen some 'fold-down' windscreens like the Willys Jeep.
(If I recall the Kubel and Schwimmwagen also had a fold-down window?)

Using both a stainless bolt and a stainles nut will cause much grief comes dissasembly time the similar metals weld together and there is little hope of dissasembly. I have used plated (galvanised bolts in the past but you must be aware that there is something called "hydrogen embrittlement" this makes the metal behave strangely making it brittle.
The same process happens when chroming structural parts.
Also look at the bolt end of the bolts you remove Most vw bolts are between 8.8 and 12.9 grade
Please change same for same. 8.8 more flexible and tough 12.9 inflexible strong but more brittle

I have seen a Beele with a front (custom obviously) Safari window. And it looked the BIZZ Only thing is that I would doubt the water-tightness of those frames

Was a bit of a hectic weekend, did not get to do a lot to the buggy - on the road for work all day, pretty gatvol at night, you know the story, but still have to keep the thread alive!

I have more or less decided on what steering wheel the buggy will get - an old 3-spoke SP Beetle steering wheel I got at a swop meet. Have disassembled it and started removing the rubber to have it re-painted and re-covered. This is a genuine VW part, and has a small VW logo just above the the bottom spoke - probaby the only place the buggy will display a VW logo. I do not know what the steering wheel is called, also can't recall seeing it on pics of other VWs in other countries? The splines are the 'smaller' type, like a Golf. Looking for the rubber horn button in the center, if anyone can help?




After some serious negotiations and arm-twisting, I managed to get an old Sanyo Rally FM radio (thanks Beetlefanatic, sorry 'bout the arm )
This is (once again) a sentimental thing - my Mom had such a radio in her 412 Variant when I was small. These radios were manufactured in SA under license of Sanyo, carried the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) logo, and was a VW option on many 70's SA VWs. Not sure if it will go into the buggy, though - the only music in a buggy should anyway be the sound of an aircooled engine and the wind through your hair

Opened the Rally, cleaned it and repainted the dial. Tested it on 12V - and it works 100% with remarkable good reception.

That is a nice choice of steering wheel I think that it's around the same size as the MK1 GTI wheel.It also shares the same splines.

I do not know what the steering wheel is called, also can't recall seeing it on pics of other VWs in other countries? The splines are the 'smaller' type, like a Golf.

It was used on some of the special edition models overseas, such as the GSR (Gelb Shwarzer Renner - Yellow Black Racer). Some of the GermanLook guys reduce the diameter of the steering wheel, as they feel it's too big. I find it the perfect size.



I'm also looking for a thin spline steering shaft, if you come across another, please let me know.

My Aunt had a Lux Bug in 1981 dont know what model but it was fitted with that same steering wheel.

Used to sit a pretend alot in that beetle.

AFAIK, all the SA special editions had them as well. Lux,Jeans, Fun Bugs. And of course the SP....

I've got two thick spline shafts myself at the moment, willing to swop one for a thin spline shaft.
