The Ratmobile (Fleetline panelvan) has been taking me to work and back again this week, after some months of driving the Mercedes every day. Thanks IMPI for the rebuilt engine!
On Monday G&I and The Rat are heading to Cape Town, starting with this exact route!:

I have been driving the bus to work since Friday. The wifes car needs a new filter which actually turns out to be quite an issue - new filter type and some pipes need replacing.... still waiting for parts... So she and the little one get my usual.
Anyway, it has been raining in JHB and the bus doesnt have wipers as yet - make for cautious driivng. Add that to the fuel gauge not working and the threat of imminent run-out, makes for exciting times. I do have a 10litre tank in the car which I am getting quite quick at dumping to the tank and getting on my way again - just hope it doesnt happen on the highway.
I am amazed by the number of people that will pull in front of me just before a traffic light or take a gap in traffic - do they want to get rammed? My brakes are fine so no problems, but I would think twice before diving in front of a 40+ year old car and stopping. People just not taught to drive defensively any more, especially in JHB.
Overall though, a really happy experience driving the bus daily. Gets lots of attention in traffic and is going really well at the moment. Puts a smile on my face

The Ratmobile took us from Somerset West to De Rust today, starting our journey home, via the N2 to Swellendam, Tradouw's Pass to Barrydale and the R62, Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn. Tomorrow we'll head over to the N9, Willowmore, Aberdeen, Graaff Reinet, Middelburg, Noupoort, Colesberg, Gariep Dam, And from there back home on Friday.
The Rat has been running well with its new engine, although I can't get the idling to settle down.

well not anywere today, but saturday ol'66 took me to dave rowley's open day in killarney garden. unfortunately it did not take me back home

Not exactly Aircooled,but have been driving a 2.1i Bus for the past 2 days. What an awesome beast, this one has a Brospeed exhaust system, so makes some lovely deep boxer engine noises

my carb packed up. had to bum a lift home, go back and tow the beetle home. dave's looking at the carb. i was aware of one of the jets being a problem (long story). gettn the carb back next week
at this point in time the beetle is not taking me anywere.

Had some problems yesterday afternoon with a faulty condensor (not even 4 weeks old) on the Squareback, thanks to Bugger and JohnHoffe for their kind offers to help - but luckily I could solve the problem myself (by putting the OLD condesor back last night).
Armed with a thermos flask with hot coffee and some cheesebuns, the Khaki Cruiser and I braved a terrible storm here in Johannesburg when we hit the road to Mpumalanga for work just before 5 this morning. The N12 was no joke - pitch dark, with heavy rainfall and wind, with just an occasional lightning strike to illuminate the area.
The weather only started clearing once we got to the Machadorp turnoff - a terrible road with enormous pot holes, all the way to Lydenburg, the place of our first appointment. Arrived there at half past 8 and finished just before 10 when we took the Long Tom Pass on the Sabie/Nelspruit Road.
Stopped for a few pics at the Long Tom Monument, and arrived in Nelspruit just before 12. Spent the remainder of the day there with another 3 appointments, and got back home about an hour ago. Total distance driven for the day: 790km. Thanks Old Girl for bringing us safely home!

Long Tom Cannon Monument
This replica of a Creusot siege cannon stands 21 km from Sabie on the Lydenburg Road (R37). The monument marks the spot where, from 8 to 11 September 1900, two of these cannons were use for the last time by the Boer commandos against the British army. These cannons - with their long barrels - were nicknamed the "Long Toms" by the British forces.
In April 1897 South Africa purchased four of these cannons with 8 800 shells. The cannons were stationed at the four forts around the City of Pretoria. During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) these cannons were used by the Boer commandos as field guns against the British army.
The British tried hard to neutralise these dreaded, formidable weapons and the Boer forces were determined that these cannons should not fall into British hands. So, when the shells had been used up, the Boers destroyed the cannons.

With the daily gone the bus stood in and took me and the kit to Dualthon this weekend at northern farm. Got a load of thumbs up there w.r.t. bus !
