Rumours has been around the speedo back to the peg with 15" front wheels, and 195-60 tyres, I should add. Accurate when previously compared to the GPS, but right then, when I was doing around 0km/h :? , I didn't feel like checking the GPS, it all gets rather light and drifty...
Then again, a Type 3 is more aerodynamic than a Beetle, so that could also play a role.

Was speaking to a German guy who has a Flat 6 in his Notch and said that it was rather comfortable cruising at 220+ KM/h, but then again his had radical mods

My first bug regularly went past the 160km/h mark on the speedo. DOn't know how fast I was actually going but it was fun. 1600 TP with Ritchie Jute 2nd stage cam, 36DCD weber with special manifold and 4-into-1 exhaust. Put a smile on the face. :hangloose:

Thanks for that article, very informative...

The fastback has a lip above the rear window, VW designed it such that air flowing over the car could be utilised in the best possible way...

Clever buggers, these German VW engineers

Obviously I keep within the legal speed limit, and so should anyone on these rather dangerous dark african roads.

I've managed to get the old far upto a whopping 68 mph. Small kids were scared, grown men clutching the pie and mash and women gasping in pure delight at the sight.

In the red Beetle, I had a balanced 1641 motor wit Scat c35 cam, flowed heads with double valvesprings, 009 distributor and 36 DCD 7 Weber on a homemade manifold and Cowley 4 into 1.

This thing would pull 6000rpm in fourth and was brilliant to race the TRD RWD Corollas and 140Z Datsuns of the early 1980's.

High speed handling was a rather religious experience though

stock 1600 with 36DCD carb and EMPI 4-1 exhaust... 195/50/15 tyres
Speedo needle vertically down 3 times and about 1mm from the zero stop once - all on level roads. Do the maths, I reckon close to 180

Great Article thanks.

Will you look at those CD figures! pretty darn good even today.

In a Volksworld article from a couple of months ago they echoed the sentiment on using the front scoop to reduce front end lift.

Wonder how fast the experts could make a fasty go at a 36HP vintage race meet?

lol @ Dsan

I am surprised that the Beetle's Cd is so high compared to the T3. Must be the flat windscreen...

The T2 1b top speed was given as 80km/hr. I believe the T2 1c was 100km/hr.
