Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
I would offer R20000 and go to max of R25000 The market is very limited and that kind of cash is hard to come by. There are quite a few of these early beetles around.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

I spent a total of 45 K to get my car to that state, If that is what you want, that is a fair price....

Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
You guys are talking oval prices here and for a 130k I could pick up a split. Maybe not as nice , but still. Is it the original engine still ? Has it been painted again ? This all plays a roll in the price .
I agree with Hendricks, Start at 20 and see where it goes. It is a good looking car . Good luck.

I agree with Calooker. - ask Grand Slam they may have one they will part with.
I also agree with Retrovan - I will also end up spending more to restore up to the same point, that I could have bought a car for.
In the end restoring gives endless gratification and bleeds you money dry over a period of time as opposed to buying a car that needs little work, cosst more in a lump sum but gives instant happiness but less hands on appreciation.
Either wa,y you will have happiness.
Value can only be determined on the amount you are willing and happy to pay.
Enjoy..

Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
A fellow forum members PERFECT 58 beetle sold for around R50k, with a whole bunch of accessories thrown in.
So good luck selling that for R85k. I love it, GREAT looking beetle, but agree, start at R20k, and work your way up, R40k would be my upper limit. There are a few things not entirely period correct to be rectified judging by the pictures, but that depends how far you want to go with it.
If it is entirely original and the papers are all 100%, then it is a solid buy, and if you get it for a reasonable price, you won't lose money. Unless you buy a very rare and special model for a steal, you don't make money off old cars, you buy them because you love them. If you sell and get your money back, give thanks and leave it at that.
Phew, that was about 3c's worth.

It is, complete, with period accessories, running, working electrics and pretty rust free, and for a '58, very hard to find in a condition like this. If it is original. If it is restored, different story.
These early, big window, beetle are highly sought after.

Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
Live and learn. Thanks for answering my question so succintly Mince. I thought perhaps that a factory rag top version would be the kind of Moola the guys suggesting. Or a cabriolet. That Judson supercharged beetle went for R130K didn't it?
Ultimately only someone who knows what they're looking at would be prepared to pay over R40K for that bug. Take me for example, I looked at it and thought... semaphores, normal looking windows... oooh I like the small tail lights. I then recalled a less than pristine similar bug that was being offered for R30K last year. I'll go look for a pic.

Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
start at 15K...you can always go up but never down...if you start throwing 30k and 40k figures around the owner may just think that this is worth a lot more and try sell it on the open market(gumtree etc.)
you will spend more money on it....that's just what we do.
good luck

Re: 1958 Find - Need to make an offer
Hey all,
Thank you for all the sound advice. I started off low as suggested and manged to secure this beauty at a price of 15k. Still can't believe it.
As far as I can tell the back lights seems to be incorrect, but that is a minor.
Thanks again. Ferdi
