I've actually mailed the photo of my bus's VIN plate to the dudes at Wolfsburg West ('cause they state on their web that they will give you all the details) - they can like to not be able to give me any info on mine's plate. So FIG, you're ahead of the pack , please stick around (at least) until you've documented all your accumulated knowledge. Write the book Bru, I am sure there are people willing to fork out a couple of bucks for good practical info & advice.

Fleetline VINs don't follow the usual German or even Brazilian pattern; they were allocated at Uitenhage. I have worked out the meaning of some of the codes on the Fleetline VIN plates, but most of that stuff remains a mystery.

Only if your full VIN is 2056 000 001. I'll explain later.

Can you send me a pic of your VIN plate? I would appreciate pics of all Fleetline VIN plates if anyone has. Comparing as many as possible may clarify the meanings of some of the codes.

You have a 1975 Fleetline 15-window Kombi, made in Brazil and assembled in SA. Yours is number 741 of about 5,000.

SO how does one determine how many were made at e.g. Brazil??? Or is it only with experience / research?

VWSA destroyed all of their records, and old literature has conflicting reports.

The highest VINs found so far point to around 5000 production.

No one really knows. The best source I have at present is the Commercial Vehicle Data Digest, which says Fleetlines were sold between 1/75 and 3/76, and that just short of 5,000 were sold in 1975. Whether that is the total of Fleetlines, or whether more were sold from 1/76-3/76 is unknown.

As I collect the codes off more VIN plates, I learn more about them, but most of the codes are still a mystery.

I've come across a few Fleetline owners who swear their buses are '74s, but I have yet to see actual in-my-hands proof of their paperwork, etc.

Me too, but all the VINs I have seen have been for 75 or 76 models; never seen a 74 Fleetline VIN, and I have seen some very low VIN#s on 75 Fleetlines. Most of these people were going on what the registration papers said, which simply can't be trusted.
