So just an update. Managed to get the bug started . New fuel pump is working well. Issue was that little spring on the inside of the carb.
That just fell out so there was no spark. Reset it back in place and she started on the first swing.

Thanks so much for all your advice, it does feel good when you do something by yourself instead of taking it to the "mechanics" out there.

I did notice a couple of things thou. There has been some oil leaking from the bottom of the casing. She didnt use to leak oil much but now there seems to be a somewhat significant leak. Is this a normal occurrence? Also the engine isnt sounding quite as good as it did before the old fuel pump gave up. I didnt take it for a drive as yet. A bit concerned about the engine sound and the oil leak. Thanks again in advance for the help.

Test your oil, your pump may be to strong and pumping fuel into your sump.

With thinner oil it will leak more and sound more tinny.

Bad for engine.

Hey Guys

So just an update on the progress. Fuel pump changed, and all sorted. Also decided to change the oil myself ( for the first time ), with some help from the forum posts and youtube i managed to get it done. Beetle is running and driving but there is still a small issue i noticed this weekend.
While driving every now and then the engine seems to cut off a bit like its starving and if i release the accelerator and rev it slightly it runs normally again for a little while then after driving for a bit the same issue occurs. Is this a timing issue?

Sound like you need to do more checks on your engine. Check valve clearances, ignition timing, vacuum leaks.

Will not be a major issue.

If it runs right for a short time, then it will run right all the time.

Clean your points on the distributor with a emery file from the missis.

Clean the inside pins in the dizzy cap and clean rotor points as well.

see that all wire connections are tight on the coil, distributor and carbs.

Try to get her to back fire by switching off the ignition on a down hill with you foot on the accelerator.

Then near the bottom turn on the key and let her back fire.

Do not turn key to lock position as you will lock up and crash.
