Says that its an 80W90 oil, but there isnt a mention of GL4 or GL5.
Because of that, I'd be hesitant to use it in a car.

I know on m cycles T4 for the wet clutch and gears but a 10w40 or 50. Being a big bore single it is a bit noisy and wonder if a 50 would be quieter?
The manufacturer recommends 40 but shell says 10w50

And I thought I knew EVERYTHING ?????? ?

Now I know nothing!!!!
I guess its everyman for himself ????

It all has to do with mileage, if your engine has high mileage, then you can comfortably go to a 50, as the thicker oil will take up the extra clearance between the worn parts.

You can even add a thick additive or as the "Old Toppies" did it with and old worn out motor, is add gearbox oil and help the motor do an extra 100 000 Km more then it would have done before bearing knock.

Thats how they got the beetle motors to run perfect with a hell of a play in the crank movement.

I think I will give it ago in the Sand Rail gearbox and see how it goes, although will probably not know if it is a disaster for a while.
My thinking is once the Rail is running is to drive it with the current gearbox oil for awhile and the change it to the Royal Purple and see what happens.

Oil selection is about ambient temperature. The higher the outside temp the higher the temp your engine runs. The hotter the oil, the thinner the film between your bearings. South Africa has a hot climate, that's why they would say 20/50. It's the best grade for our conditions. I run an XR650 and wouldn't use anything lower than 20/50. People go with the OEM recommendation but must realize they're in Europe or Japan. Much cooler than SA.
