Found an interesting article in the CAR magazine, the steering wheel was available as an optional accessory for the early Golfs as well, the article posted here  http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... =25&t=9507

I bought a steering wheel like that at a swap meet, knew it was VW (VW sign duhh) but did not know from which model it came. An SP, wow and all the way in the US, wonder how it got here, it has the button (sorry Pine) and the hub. Good condition.
Don't argue with an idiot, people watching may not be able to tell the difference

Update 27/10/08:

Spent some time the weekend on the steering wheel, removed the rubber padding (it was a tatty and loose), and removed all the paint. Had to do some fine sanding on certain areas to remove the pit marks created by surface rust. The inner part is a single piece of metal, precision cut in the factory. How they did that, I don't know (before the time of laser or plasma cutters), I guess it was stamped out of the metal with some kind of dye. The three spokes are slightly bent outwards, to give the steering wheel a small dish, not visible when the padding is on. Note how the metal discoloured on the outer edges of the spokes, as if the welding was done only yesterday. Also interesting to see that the three spokes are not symmetrical (like an upside down Merc badge), turn the picture on its side to see what I mean.

Would love to have the inner part chromed, but if the price is too ridiculous, I'll have it painted.

Can anyone suggest a place where I can have the wheel re-covered?

You could try Speedline. They offer a wheel-covering service in almost any material that you can think of. It's around R350-00, IIRC.

Thanks, they are the same guys currently making the Sprintstar centre caps, which will be available before the end of the year. Chris (from Lichtenburg) has seen a pre-production copy of it, and it was made so well he initally thought it was the original cap he had sent them as a sample!

Let us know how your 'wheel turns out, if you send it to Speedline. I'd like to have that GTI one done as well.
