One other nifty trick I used on my red bug. The gear shift has been relocated closer to the seat and lifted up slightly. No more bending over to reach the gear lever.

Now that is a smart mod that I'd consider doing as well. The gear lever in a beetle is too far forward for us long legged people who have the seat slid right back.
I actually find myself hunched over the steering wheel most of the time.
How do you connect the shift rod to the gearbox?
Do you cut a slot in the tunnel further back?

I shortened the std beetle shift rod and bent it a bit. I had to cut a slot for the rod to pass through. Also my tranny is lifted a bit for the rear camber compensation, so that also helps a to connect the shift rod on the top.

Cool. Not as bad as I thought.
Does reverse still work?
I'm not sure of the motion the reverse selection makes on the shaft but I assume it's only an extra twist?

In Cape Town you got the advantage of sea level... we're at 4000ft above sea level. But still 12's are good.

Wrong Eben. Ron Metz does not have a beetle. Maybe you are thinking of the ex Dave Ingle Beetle.

Hey 4age....
Things are coming on nicely with your fasty??
2 things I would like to ask:
1: What are those pipes coming out of your tranny as per your pic of the bent gear shaft above??? Turbo? Oil cooler??
2: Are those second hand 90.5's still available?? and at what price. I will be up in Joburg on the weekend and would like to see them if they still available..
